I am at present on holiday in Cyprus and must say it is great weather. people etc which I knew it would be as have been a number of times and was going to live there in 1995 but anybody booked for a holiday later in the year beware it is very expensive.

My son went to a wedding there last year and said it had got expensive but I was surprised how much so. The average cost of shopping in a supermarket is 10 -15% dearer than the uk for most items, even Cypriot own brand rather than Heinz Birds Eye etc. Eating out is about 20% dearer than the Uk and at all costs avoid eating on Ladies Mile Beach (Limassol) snack bars a Burger is eu 9.50 and a can of own brand pop not Fanta or Tango is eu 2.80

I love the country and all in it but can fully understand why Brit Ex Pats are returning home. When I was going to buy a bar there in 1994/5 my Cypriot partner, which I had to have. had a bar and going in there on Monday he said that he had 20 regular couples that used his bar have returned home because they could no longer afford to live there on there pensions and four others had moved from Limassol to a villages up in the Troodos mountains as it is so much cheaper to live up there.

My brother lives in the Larnaca district, it's been shockingly expensive for a while now, you just have to get used to it, and know where to go, there are still places where the prices are most definitely for 'locals'.

We went out with my mates wife and when the bill came she started talking to them in the native tongue saying that she was Cypriot and the bill was reduced by 30%. It started getting expensive when they joined the EU and the Euro as it was very cheap when it was Cyprus Pounds. In 1994/95 we were going to buy a 3 bedroomed apartment 50 yds from the sea for Cy£ 7,000 within 12 months of being in the EU that price had risen to Eu 40,000 (sorry dont know how to do the euro sign). Nobody apparently is buying property in Cyprus now not even the Russians. I am told.
