Two-team race for Hoggard
05th November 2009
Sussex are in a two-way fight to land former England bowler Matthew Hoggard.
The county and second division rivals Leicestershire have both offered the 32-year-old a three-year contract although the Foxes have also told Hoggard they want him to be captain as well.
Several counties including Essex, Worcestershire and Middlesex expressed their interest in signing Hoggard when he left Yorkshire last month but all have dropped out of the race.
Chief executive Dave Brooks said: “As far as we are aware it is just us and Leicestershire who are left in the race - we are down to the last two.
“If you are serious about signing someone like Matthew you have to offer him the security of a three-year contract. It was one of the reasons why he left Yorkshire so it is the right thing to do.”
Leicestershire remain favourites to sign Hoggard who is being shown around property in the north of the county today while the county have also been asked to draw up a written contract head of his visit."
Brooks said: “We have made our pitch, so have Leicestershire and now we have to give the player some space to make his decision.”
Sussex have signed young batsman Matt Machan on the cricketing equivalent of an apprenticeship.
The 18-year-old has signed a junior contract which ties him to the club until the end of the 2011 season.
Brooks added: “It bridges the gap between the academy and a professional contract. At this stage we don’t feel Matt is ready to be a full pro but to fulfill his potential he needs to be working on his cricket full time.”
Yasir Arafat will play for New Zealand’s Twenty20 champions Otago at the end of Pakistan’s three-Test series in New Zealand.
Sussex confirm Monty interest
05th November 2009
Chief executive Dave Brooks confirmed today that Sussex are interested in signing England spinner Monty Panesar.
Northamptonshire have given the 27-year-old permission to talk to other counties even though he has a year left on his contract.
Brooks said: "When there are players of Monty's proven ability available I would expect (coach) Mark Robinson to be banging on my door to see what chances there are of us signing them. We are trying to improve our squad and he would definitely do that."
Panesar's career has been on the wane for several months. He lost his England place to Graeme Swann while his county did not pick him for their final Championship match of the season.
Northants are keen to get him off their wage bill after he lost his central contract in September.
