Anyone else do this?

I have for 10+ years... but finally about to cancel.

Easier now kids are older, fewer toys etc.

God knows how much I've spent storing stuff, much of which I'm now happy to clear out/recycle.

Also: just found a floppy disk with games and schoolwork - from 1985.

We were having loads of building work done and had to put most of our possessions into storage. Sorting it all we were pretty ruthless and gave away/sold/chucked moats of stuff. Year later the works were all done and we are in position to get our stuff back. And were shocked at how much of it just seemed like crap and got rid of about 3/4 of it all.

dont understand why people don’t just sell, donate or throw stuff. My loft, other than seasonal decorations such as Christmas, Halloween etc, is completely empty. I feel it puts you in a better head space rather than it being ‘tomorrows job’ and shoving stuff up there

Yeah - did exactly the same thing.

Essentially: "I'll need this stuff soon so I'll use storage and then get it back in the near future."

The storage companies know this too, which is why they offer quite heavy introductory discounts.

You think: "Those first three months are cheap, and I probably won't need any longer than that."

Then, as you say, many years later you're thinking "Bollocks - I really need to sort out that stuff in storage!"

This. My god I’ve spent most of last year processing my late parents loft (and their parents stuff which was chucked up there. Little to no value just hoarded ‘might be useful one day’ shite that should been thrown out decades ago) It’s absurd what people keep just because. Do self a massive favour (and your kids) and get rid of it all now!!

Because it was 'important' at the time - and I needed more space.

But, no, it doesn't seem so important when you sort it out years later. I was acknowledging that.

Edit: Actually, it all started with a declutter for a house sale/move... which didn't happen.

Completely the attitude I take , putting anything in the loft is just another thing the kids will have to sort out and throw away when I’m gone

Today I binned some videos of TV progs from the 1990s.

But it will take a massive bloke with arms of steel to prize my thousands of CDs (stored alphabetically) off me.

I am a hoarder but I also have just enough insight to not . . . . avoid chucking stuff out.... eventually.

It will be an emotional journey letting go . . . . best of luck

Yes. When I moved here we stored all of our furniture and belongings with Pickfords. It ended up being in storage for 10 years and a total waste of quite a lot of money. It would have been cheaper to just keep the personal items, CDs and vinyl and sling a house worth of furniture in the tip and buy brand new when we moved into our new apartment . It also cost thousands to eventually ship it to Berlin (I won’t mention the Brexit tax either).

When we decided to ship we decided we’d off load some items which were no use like kettles and toasters and they wanted a fee for attending the site and a fee for opening each crate. It would have been cheaper to buy my friends the items brand new.

TL : DR - useful for shorterm only. Otherwise it’s a con.

I'm currently going through all the shit in my workshop that I've kept "just in case". I've come across a box of empty beer bottles, does anyone know why I've kept them.

When I moved to Norfolk from Brighton, I packed the shed with boxes of stuff I couldn’t bear to part with from my old house as well as a push bike, paint for the new house, tools, bird feeders, an old oak chair, various wellies and finally a wheelchair - I then built a summer house and filled that with furniture I had bought from my old house and moved into my new house but that I didn’t want and finally erected a large exercise bike during lockdown.

There’s nearly as much stuff in my garden as there is in the house.

I wish to heavens I had used storage - I might be tempted to stop paying the rent and let them dump everything but as it is …I now have to clear out all the boxes that have not been unpacked and get rid of the furnitue.

TL;DR I moved 9 years ago  paying for storage might have made me dump it sooner.

Cost me thousands and hundreds of hours not to mention real stress, sweat and even blood too. I curse my parents memory in this respect, they refused help and ignored tackling for decades. The boomer generation are / were utter hoarders not realising they lived through the first age of mass consumerism and what they paid it certainly wasn’t worth anything near or was completely worthless/redundant after. There really wasn’t any need to keep a 1960s-70s potty or commode or pram or television or toaster…

Completely this. Even the ST can be expensive. And of course before you know it, it’s become the LT.

Bin it now, my advice for anyone. Don’t go down the storage road. Might as well burn money (as HT discovered and he’s far far from alone!)
