Hiroshima Peace Park

As Dave said about going to Auschwitz thought I'd mention my trip to Hiroshima while in Japan last year.
Due to a typhoon being just off the coast the weather was awful as you would expect but the rain did lead to one good thing.
I spent a very long time in the Peace Park memorial Museum.
It cost about 50p to enter but was worth much more.
Some of the photo's are amazing including one which is called something like the black shadow.
When the bomb was dropped somebody nearby to the blast was sitting on some steps outside a building.
Such was the force of the explosion that a outline of the person who was sitting there has been permanently marked in the steps.
No children were killed in the blast as they had all been moved out of the city before due to American bombing.
If anyone has ever thought of going to Hiroshima I would strongly suggest they go.
It's a wonderful city with a place like the lanes in Brighton but all undercover and with about 200 shops in the city centre.

Regardless of what you think about the pros and cons of the bombing, and the likely alternatives if it hadn't been used, I think we can all agree that it was absolutely horrifying.

Read new book called Nuclear War. In shops now. I deliberately bought for a doom-monger type and he’s not slept properly for a week!! I love the preface which includes “a nuclear war could start tomorrow. Or later today….” Yikes!!

I went in May this year and will return again in October.
As you say, it is an amazing place and walking through the exhibition looking at the photos is very thought provoking.
We also had a talk from a survivor who was 6 at the time of the bomb and was about 3km away and recounts his memories of his family.
I hadn’t realised until I visited that the bomb was designed to explode before it hit the ground.

Very different time and place but a holocaust memorial in its own right is the genocide centre in Kigali, Rwanda. 1 million people murdered in 30 days. Terrifying what ordinary people can do to each other if brainwashed (Farage et al take note) into hate and extreme anger.
Yet only 30 years on, a people that have come together with such forgiveness, love and acceptance that they are now a beacon of hope for humanity.

I see this is a very old post but am intrigued as to why you thought no children were killed in the blast? Bizarre claim.

It's called and air burst. It essentially creates a pressure wave between the ground and the explosion, maximising the blast. Simple but devastating.

I've always wanted to visit Hiroshima but I think I'd find it too emotional. Same with Auschwitz.

Going for the 2nd time in October too. A very moving experience except for the visitor book which some Americans had written, .. You bastards had it coming ..

Me too. Would be really hard to get my head round the events at both sites.
