FBI director James Comey has told Congress the bureau is reopening its inquiry into Hillary Clinton's emails.

Investigators have discovered new emails "in connection with an unrelated case... that appear to be pertinent to the investigation", he said.

Mr Comey said investigators would determine whether the emails contain classified information.

The FBI has already found the Democratic candidate had classified information on a private email server.

Mr Comey had previously called Mrs Clinton's handling of classified information during her time as secretary of state "extremely careless", but cleared her of any criminal wrongdoing.

The FBI chief said in his letter to Congress he "cannot yet assess whether or not this material may significant, and I cannot predict how long it will take us to complete this additional work".

Does this hand Trump the election?

No of course not, but this will and should sway a lot of undecided voters to his side. Quite how she got away with it in the first place is beyond me, given what Wikileaks etc has revealed. Hopefully we'll see some justice, HRC off the ballot and Sanders as an emergency replacement!

Too little too late. HRC doesn't deserve the presidency but the neither does Trump. What a mess. Fun though isn't it? Light relief from the Brexit bruhaha!

Wouldn't Tim Kaine be the emergency replacement?

Emails evidently not sent by HRC, not withheld, and not from her private server. Non-story?

I don't think so but I do wonder about the timing of this. I still find it hard to believe that she walked away from the original email scandal scot-free when General Petraeus had the book thrown at him for similarly misusing emails; the FBI decision not to prosecute Clinton flies in the face of what seems to be overwhelming evidence. There's a part of me that wonders if there's been pressure from senior people in the FBI who do not like or trust Clinton and are now trying to bring her down. Maybe it's just a coincidence but only in the last couple of weeks we've seen a very strong endorsement of Trump by ex-FBI director James Kallstrom.

What a choice for the Americans. A four-time bankruptee who doesn't trust black accountants, who looks at young girls as future conquests and wants to be besties with Putin or an amoral woman who appears to be congenitally corrupt. It seems a fitting end to 2016. What a year.

This is pretty wild so close to the election...should have gone with Sanders. He would be stomping Trump.

I'm not so sure. I suspect that his appeal is similar to Jeremy Corbyn and that outside the bubble of Sanders' very vocal and passionate support, mainstream America is extremely distrustful of anyone claiming to be a socialist. I saw an interview and feature on one of the other losing candidates. Martin O'Malley and he came across very well and from what the report suggested and from hearing him sounded like a safe pair of hands.

i havent the energy to dig through the layers, but i gather that the wikileaks email claims doesnt reveal what people think it does, it shows something suspicious that with some suggestion that leads people to what they want to believe. for weeks there was supposed to be a big reveal and nothing, now a seperate source has made new allegations come to light. dont believe much from wikileaks, its as much an instrument of political agendas and self aggrandisement, as it is a source of whistleblowing and public disclosure.

What, like WW3 you mean? Wonder what odds the bookies are offering for that if Chump gets in?

WW3 either from the outcome of a 'leave vote' to HRC or Trump in the whitehouse or migration problems. So many sparks for WW3 to chose from...........

Maybe a fair gamble if attractive odds for the Chump?

At least when Putin decides to bomb/invade Europe, we'll be safely out of it by then! So long as we get on with Brexit and building Nissans!
