Hereford United suspended from all football, sad day for the sport: Shame the FA hasn't acted on numerous other indiscretions at football clubs over the years.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/dec/10/hereford-united-suspended-fa-football

Hereford United have been suspended from all football with immediate effect, the Football Association said in a statement.

Hereford were expelled from the Conference in June over their unpaid debts and have been playing in the Southern Premier League while the local council has begun repossession proceedings for the club’s Edgar Street ground.

The club’s majority shareholder, Alan McCarthy, had been charged with acting as an officer of Hereford United without written confirmation from the FA to do so.

The FA’s statement said: “Having failed to comply with the orders of the Independent Regulatory Commission, both Hereford United and Alan McCarthy are suspended from all football and football activity with immediate effect.

“The club and Mr McCarthy, officer of Hereford United FC, were ordered to fully and correctly comply with their obligations under the owners’ and directors’ test regulations by 4pm on Thursday 4 December 2014.

“Following consideration of a document submitted by the club, the Independent Regulatory Commission gave the parties until 4pm on Monday 8 December 2014 to submit further documentation to satisfy the orders of the commission.

“Having failed to provide the requested further documentation by the deadline, both Hereford United and Mr McCarthy shall remain suspended until such time as the order of the Independent Regulatory Commission has been complied with to the satisfaction of the commission.

“The FA understands the importance of football clubs to their local communities and will continue to work with all relevant parties to ensure senior football returns to Hereford at the earliest opportunity, although this will be contingent on the club complying with the regulations and subsequent orders of the Independent Regulatory Commission.”

"Alan McCarthy, had been charged with acting as an officer of Hereford United without written confirmation from the FA to do so."

When exactly did the FA think it got the power to decide on an officer of a limited company ?

A sad day for football and it seems like an injustice when other clubs like Palace , Leeds , Portsmouth and Leicester have all been treated leniently in light of this decision just because at the time they were too big a club to receive a real and proper punishment.

Feel sorry for them I must admit, that could have been us if we'd lost that day.

This. It's a travesty.

I live quite near Hereford, so I get to see the stadium at fairly regular intervals. The place hasn't been touched since the mid 90's. Quite honestly it is ready to be demolished before if falls down.

Sad for their fans and bad for the City, as it's already lost the racecourse. I just can't see how they are going to survive this.

When Hereford United signed up to membership of the Football Association and agreed to comply with its rules.

Has everyone forgotten how they wanted us thrown out of the league? How they wanted to destroy us? Just me then.

Was that the fans? the people at Hereford who wanted to see us thrown out of the league are probably gone and long forgotten by now. The fans are the only part of a club who are there for the long haul, and I don't think any decent fan really wants to see the demise of another club, even if they are rivals.

From my experience living up there (before returning to Sussex), I'd say that they're contributing to their own downfall. They are so utterly resistant to change in that county- not even in a Southern nimby way, so many commoners on the street are fearful of any sort of development. Maybe this isn't so much the case in Hereford itself, but in Herefordshire as a whole, there are so areas that are so backwards compared to other areas of the country.

In the 1998/9 season Robbie Reinelt played a season for Stevenage [Borough as it was then] FC. On the day of Hereford at home game I asked the announcer [a friend] to pay particular attention to pronouncing Robbie's name just to wind up the Hereford fans. The reaction from some 250 of them was predictable and continued throughout the game. Seem to recall Robbie had a big smile at the end of 90mins.

Absolutely terrible news.

Hope they survive.

Most of the fans see the suspension as positive news. They want the club wound up so that they can start again without the lowlife who are currently in possession. The current ownership seem to be intent on running the club down in order to develop the ground (there's been talk of a casino).

Doubtful that the suspension will last until the weekend unfortunately, as they're already shuffling "ownership" between themselves to get around the FA.

Im not sure about Hereford itself, but the surrounding villages are very much as you describe. Any development is viewed with suspicion, and the default mentality is to oppose everything.

I understand that a supporters group is ready to take over once the council has sole ownership again.

Yes, but there's also a lot of suspicion about the Council's role in the whole business. Material released to the fans in response to FoI requests seems to suggest that the Council themselves may rather have been hoping for a redevelopment of Edgar St, which is in a prime location and a bit of an eyesore, and at least early on to have been in close contact with the new owners.
