Been a republican for many years and I still think there is a time and place for protest. Now is really not the time and is probably damaging the movement rather than helping.

Respect. I mean, if I bumped into Harry it would perhaps be an opportunity to ask “why is your wife such a bitch?” But you wouldn’t say that now, poor man’s grieving.

We should probably have a different thread for the instances of weirdos. Far too many people being interviewed who clearly are a bit odd in expressing their grief.

Eg “I had to be here, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity” (very poor choice of words IMO!) Also, people that have been round seeing her lying in state 7 or more times! (Sake, it’s not a fairground ride!) “I wanted to bring my baby so I can say she was there” (again, you mawkish ****, it’s not a giant selfie!)

These occasions always bring out the loons but when it’s a death I find all the smiling at the cameras and “Me me me”, almost “grief offs” all rather undignified. What’s wrong with mourning her without desperately seeking a media outlet or posting your own footage online to gain ‘likes’? Some very peculiar people…

Quite, I attended a very quiet and simple Church Service at St. Marys on Friday afternoon. No wish to do the media nonsense in London, I have paid my respects.

I'm the same. Say what you like about the institution, but the Queen did what was expected of her and was a constant in all of our lives. I particularly respected her neutrality which must have been testing in some periods of her reign.

The time to question whether the deference afforded the Royal family is justified will be in five years time or so, when the cost of replacing everything from stamps & coins, to police uniforms and post boxes starts adding up (along with the ridiculous sovereign grant) as we have all been through economic hardship, KCIII wears everyone down with his meddling in things he's unqualified to meddle in, Andrew is still doing his level best to worm his way back into public life, and the dumb flag-shaggers are still blaming Markle for ruining everything.

Absolutely this. I don’t agree with them being arrested. They should have just been moved on. But no, this is silly protest. It achieves nothing.

Unless I’m wrong and it’s achieved it’s goal with the publicity. But my opinion is in line with yours.

Scousers on trial tonight to see if they can get through a minute’s silence without spoiling it.

I would say I have Republican sympathies. If you have to have a Royal Family we could do a lot worse. I just wish they were elected.

But one can’t deny the selfless devotion to duty that has gone on for over 70 years, and trust that Charles will go the same route.

I thought the slow March from Holyrood up to the Cathedral was wonderful. Just so quietly dignified.
My grandfather was in the King’s own battalion of the Grenadier Guards before the First World War so did guard duty at Buckingham Palace and the like. I remember as a kid watching Churchill’s funeral with him….. “those lines aren’t straight”, “they can’t March” and so on. It was still impressive.
But all yesterday’s stuff seemed to me to be beautifully done.

(Long before the internet and war graves/roll-call websites), we visited Edinburgh castle in about 1991 and in voluminous regimental books I found entries for my two great-great uncles who died at Passchendaele in 1917. A goosebumps moment coming across the names of those heroes from my family.

I loved Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle is also fantastic.

Pros and cons to each argument. Biggest flaw in republicans argument is democracy. The purest fallacy. I mean, how’s the first past the post working out for you at the moment and the last 20 years?!! Least we’ve a green in Charles, if he’s there to nag the conscience of all the bean counting politicians and electorate then that’s only a good thing. As a species we will still be bleating on about money to the last man, as the waves drown us or the fire engulfs us.

Ahead of his time, along with many others, when it wasn't trendy. A hero of mine Jonathan Porritt, in the last few days has had undiluted praise for his contribution to raising interest in ecosystems, conservation and global climate change.

[One big blot though ..... bloody fox hunting].

Charles may be green (although he can afford to be, and he doesn't come up with solutions for those of us with bills to worry about) but meddles in all sorts of things he is unqualified to meddle in - especially architecture and green issues. Meanwhile he continues to head a completely unaccountable family, who only pay taxes when they feel like it, and in the case of his brother, do as they please without fear of arrest and justice.
There are far more flaws in having an unaccountable head of state who is above the law. I take your point about FPTP, but that just suggests this flavour of democracy has had its day as a two/three party is simply unrepresentative of the population. Any democracy is better than the alternative - unaccountability.

Yeah totally over it now, why as a country do we dwell on things for so long or until the next BIG story comes along.
Surely hearing some other news isn't that disrespectful?

Yes we didn’t have any weather for three days apparently.

Given that’s what most of us have as a main topic of conversation the minutes silence ended up being 60 hours

Any sound will justify the football authorities cancelling games last weekend and confirm the thoughts that we are all scum.
