Funny, isn't it, that when people take the piss out of religion, they really mean Christianity ?

No, not really. Mainly because it isn't true.

Taking a look at this thread: There are plenty of jokes about Christianity on the first page - as a direct response to the opening post which was specifically about Christianity (there was a clue in the thread title). The posts I've made have mentioned the Christian gospels - again as a direct response to them being used as an example by a poster on the "pro-religion" side of the debate. There is also mention (and mocking) of Genesis - a book that applies to both Christianity and Judaism.

My opinions on belief apply equally to every religion. A criticism of a belief applies to all those who hold it. Perhaps a better question would be: "Funny, isn't it, that when people hear a criticism of religion, they assume it's aimed specifically at theirs?"

I think, to be fair, that a lot of the criticism on this board is aimed at religion in general, but tends to pick up on Christian themes because those are what we are familiar with; I'd love to be able to debate the text of the Qur'an and Muslim beliefs but unfortunately I don't know anywhere near enough about it. The arguments we have on here simply reflect our upbringing and our cultural reference points.

I do very occasionally go to Church (about 3/4 times a year to please the mother-in-law) despite being an atheist, and I just find the whole thing slightly amusing (perhaps 'quaint' would be a less offensive term). I love the community aspects, and a work friend who is an open-minded believer (to the point that we can have discussions about it, and about his interpretation and ability to fuse his beliefs with scientific discoveries) is one of those people that spends his weekends organising community groups and helping out elderly parishioners, which I think is a fantastic thing and provides a great benefit to the local community. However I find the idea of coming together once a week to 'plead' to your God (which is, in my experience, what some church leaders like to do in their Sunday morning services) I just find slightly unnerving.

Either way, Christians believe these recordings to be historically true, and Atheists don't. This goes for many historical events/reports. Both viewpoints are perfectly fine and should be respected, I'm sure you'll agree.

A pedant would point out that it's not only atheists, but also the members of the countless other religions out there that don't believe them.

Anyway, I'm not deliberately trying to be a dick but no, I don't agree. Sorry, but as a general point, two viewpoints - one based on critical analysis, rational thought, and a demand for evidence, and one based upon blind faith in the face of such evidence - for me cannot be said to have equal standing. This doesn't just apply to religion of course. Be it 9/11 'truthers', birthers, believers in astrology, dianetics, alchemy, and many others all fall under the same umbrella - holding a belief in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence is by definition irrational and doesn't, for me, command equal respect.

Anyway this is going off the topic I objected to. I too believe that religion shouldn't be without criticism, and this recent debate has been what it should be; a debate. But the comments posted on the first page were ignorant insults, and that's what I objected to. Like I said, I would feel exactly the same if people started slinging around ignorant insulting comments about people's political beliefs.

More than fair enough. As I say, I don't hold a lot of respect for belief at all, but I will agree that being deliberately offensive/insulting is uncalled for.
