What does it matter that I'm new to the forum? People shouldn't be spouting offensive religious comments. We should be better than that.

You'd hope but it is still a football forum. Plenty of ignorance regarding religion abounds here.

As I said, new here. I've been on nsc in this incarnation and it's predecessor for over 8 years and for almost that entire time people on here have been arguing about religion. Ask someone about bibi (if I remember that yiddish idiots name correctly). If you don't want religious arguments then really nsc is probably not the place for you.

Incidentally, what do you think about desert.....Nahh, I won't go there.

He wasn't referring to whether he wanted "religious arguments" or not. I think he's suggesting that people could show a bit more respect to each others personal lives. Which is unquestionable really.

No he didn't. He said something about spouting offensive religious comments.

<snip>I thought we would all be above ignorant criticisms of other peoples faiths?
and
<snip>People shouldn't be spouting offensive religious comments.

That has very little to do with peoples personal lives, any more than peoples beliefs in pixies are to do with their personal lives. It is to do with their delusions and fantasys.

If he is REALLY offended by anything posted in this thread he better not be around when a real one starts. The poor little flower will probably have kittens.

Edit to add this as well.

Yep, all those atheists are totally ignorant about the delusions associated with religion. aren't they? Just a shame that almost always they know more about it than the theists really.

I believe in every single one of the 206 gods. They all make perfect sense, represent zero hypocrisy and convenient excuses.

Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

As Mellotron rightly inferred from my comments, I have absolutely nothing against religious arguments. I totally respect Atheist arguments and a respectful debate is actually both insightful and productive. What I objected to are such comments telling people to grow up and patronising those who have faith with comments such as 'do you still believe in Father Christmas?' The thread wasn't remotely an intellectual debate; it was an offensive belittling of religion/faith, which billions of people adhere to and I suspect, like you said in your 8 years of being on this forum, many NSC members believe in too. Would you think it was okay if people on here started insulting, for example, gays? Btw I will ignore your patronizing.

Indeed, which is why they shouldn't degrade their own legitimate arguments by chucking around childish insults.

Don't be ridiculous, if something is held by someone very dearly of course it is to do with their personal lives. Clearly there are going to be people on NSC with religious beliefs.

You seem very angry for some reason though so best I leave you to your little rant. Maybe do the gays next, then blacks.

OK Mellotron, you are being entirely ridiculous. Religion is a choice and thus, is up for discussion, which is important. Being Gay or Black is not up for ridicule because they are not choices, they are the way you are born and have no control over.

Religion has no logical or factual basis. Religion was invented to control the masses and is based on nothing but faith. Which one of the 206 gods do you have faith in mellotron?

I would estimate that most "religious" people would say it WASN'T their choice. You have faith or you don't. It's not ridiculous to ask people to respect other people's private beliefs. There is nothing ridiculous about that at all, and it would be bigoted to suggest otherwise.

Of course, that is very debatable and it comes down to the very nature of how far you view scripture/other religious writings as historical documents. Of course, if the Bible is an accurate historical document (or any other religious scripture), then Christianity/said Religion has every logical and factual basis.

But see, piersa for example has put forward an argument, not an insult. That's the difference, readingstockport.

ETA: Scientists have faith everyday in what they perceive to be true and what they can see. Christians have faith everyday in what they've read, in their opinion, to be a historical document. There's little difference.

Anyway, we are getting way off track. Asking people to respect each other's beliefs/or lack of (providing they're not forcing it on you) is a basic human right.

Reality has a godless bias. Believe in science, evidence, evolution, gene families, and the natural mechanisms that created the universe 4.5 billion years ago where we are just a beautiful bi-product. Then think of the millions of other galaxies out there we know exist and ask yourself how anyone can think a Creator could make us the centre of it all? Barmy.

Who said they made us the centre of it all? We have no idea what else is out there.

I have no problem with people being religous per say. However when people use it as a weapon, a veil to hide behind or force their beliefs on others, it becomes offensive. I personally find religion contradictory and don't understand why, for instance, we need the ten comandments to make us lead good moral lives. Common sense tells me that i should not steal, covet, f*** my neighbours wife etc. I do however understand that religion can give people comfort in their hour of need.

What does it matter if there is a God or not? What you believe doesn't matter. We're here, and we won't be here for long. Get on with it.

Sorry me again, I just want to get this straight, I may have been a little patronising about religion, I have no prejudice against anything, except Palarse fans obviously, If you truly beleive that a man in the sky who from what I can see made Dinosaurs etc then got bored killed them all off and started again by creating a small pond slime that eventualy evolved into man kind, then because man kind was naughty (which obviously we are not now which is why no second coming of christ) God sent his son to earth (A yewish man, so shouldnt we all be Jewish, god made his son a Jew and if anyone picks the right religion it would him) then for our naughtiness he decided to have his son killed for our sins then later decided to bring him back as a zombie and all this was docemented twice (new and old testiment) by a group of blokes over many years, so far you have me hooked Im thinking this could well be real, its a revelation im seeing the light, If I was to say three men followed a bright light in the sky to an artificial inseminationed women who gave birth to a super human (hybrid) the whole thing wasnt god it was Aliens!!!! :)

Thou shall not kill and love thy neighbour are two things that exist in every religion, yet Relious people get so easly offend they start wars over it, all im saying is if you want to beleive thats fine you are your own person, in the same way if I want to compare my experiance of god to that of Father Christmas then so be it

We have a fair idea based on evidence. But true, there could be a giant green pig floating outside the universe but we have no indication that there is one.

Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
<caveat> and anything else we find through evidence and science, apart from evolution obviously.
