Best one I can think of is by a band in the early 80s called Midnight Oil. They were Australian and well politcal and did a song called beds are burning (I think). It was all about giving the aboriginies back their land which bacically meant the whole of Australia. Can't remember the name of the song but always have been good at remembering lyrics, something like

'The western desert lives and breathes
at 45 degrees.

The time has come to say fair's fair,
to pay the rent, to pay our share

The time has come, a facts a fact,
it belongs to them, lets give it back!'

Some good suggestions already, but here's a top 10 of others:

10. Everything But The Girl - Missing
"And I miss you like the deserts miss the rain"

9. Frank Sinatra - Shadows On The Sand

8. Carly Simon - The Desert

7. Pat Boone - Love Letters In The Sand

6. Nick Drake - Clothes Of Sand

5. Desert Shadows - Garden of Shadows

4. Jimi Hendrix - Castles Made Of Sand

3. M.O.D. - Ass-Ghanistan

I hadn't heard of this one, but here are some of the lyrics:

"...so you think it's HOT in the desert where you make your stand?
gonna turn that desert into glass when we NUKE Ass-Ghanistan
some f***ing Jihad
you said the blood will flow like a river
but what you didn't tell us is the blood is yours
from the ass-kicking that we delivered
so pile up the sand ............
we'll show you the real meaning of faith
your asses we will o-blit-ter-rate
and watch your camels d-cint-ter-grate..."

(Actually, it's probably best to leave this one out...)

2. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage

1. Sting - Desert Rose

----------------------------------------------------------

U2's Joshua Tree album is probably a decent shout - the original photos by Anton Corbijn taken in the Mohave Desert are timeless iconic images.

The video of In God's Country from the album is also great for showing some images of poor folk living in the US desert areas in the time of Depression.

Even better, here's a couple of suggestions for songs that they can sing in school.

Kids love actions - there's plenty that can be done along with the songs.

1. Going To The Desert (Sung to: "She'll Be Coming 'Round The Mountain)

We are going on a journey to the desert
We are going on a journey to the desert
We are going on a journey
We are going on a journey
We are going on a journey to the desert

Oh we won't see snow or ice while we're there
Brrrrr Brrrrr
Oh we won't see snow or ice while we're there
Brrrrr Brrrrr
Oh we won't see snow or ice
Oh we won't see snow or ice
Oh we won't see snow or ice while we're there
Brrrrr Brrrrr

Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will
Phew Phew!!!!
Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will
Phew Phew!!!!
Oh the sun will be shining
Oh the sun will be shining
Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will
Phew Phew!!!!

You can add the following verses:

Oh we'll see a saguaro cactus where we're there
Ouch ouch!

Oh we'll see a roadrunner-----watch it go!
Whoosh whoosh!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Animals In The Desert (Sung to: The Wheels On The Bus)

The coyote in the desert howls Awwwwooooooowwwww
Awwwwooooooowwwww
Awwwwooooooowwwww
The coyote in the desert howls Awwwwooooooowwwww
All night long!

The rattlesnake in the desert goes hiss hiss hiss
hiss hiss hiss
hiss hiss hiss
The rattlesnake in the desert goes hiss hiss hiss
All night long!

The jackrabbit in the desert hops like this
hops like this
hops like this
The jackrabbit in the desert hops like this
All night long!

The roadrunner in the desert runs fast like this
runs fast like this
runs fast like this
The roadrunner in the desert runs fast like this
All night long!

The javalina (prounounced hav-a-leen-a) in the desert snorts like this
snorts like this
snorts like this
The javalina in the desert snorts like this
All night long!

The gila (prounounced hee-la) monster in the desert crawls slow like this
crawls slow like this
crawls slow like this
The gila (prounounced hee-la) monster in the desert crawls slow like this
All night long!

The scorpion in the desert stings like this OUCH!
stings like this OUCH!
stings like this OUCH!
The scorpion in the desert stings like this OUCH!
All night long!

Hope they're of use.

I still can't believe they give primary school kids homework these days. When I was 9 I was out playing football on the green with my mates every night, homework didn't come until secondary school. What a waste of everyones time, I'm glad I'm not a kid now.

The annoying thing about any of this, no matter how hard you try and help your little johnny, there is always a little girl called Isabella or something who's mummy is damned f**king good at giving her all the information or spends all weekend making some costume out of the latest Westend play, who stands there all smug, in the playground, that due to her indulgence her little spoilt brat of a thing is going to be paraded around the classroom as the ideal child.

New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Big.

I put my pain in a jar and it will be full tomorrow.”

"Beds are burning" is the correct name of that song. Useless bit of trivia for you - Midnight Oil's lead singer, Peter Garrett, is now Australia's federal Environment Minister
