I really need to have a VNC server / viewer setup so that I can remote access my parent's computer.

Dad is 80 and active online but not at all tech savvy and I'm concerned about online scammers etc.

I also need access to assist with the small issues he encounters which are basic issues but involve me visiting to resolve.

Can anyone suggest what I need? A link to an online guide and a recommended (free) software solution?

I used to use some software in a previous job well over a decade ago so I assume things have moved on in that time?

Presumably I can ask him to run the VNC server only when I need access as I'm not looking to snoop etc.

Thanks

I’m not an expert by any means but did use Teamviewer to help my dad out a bit (never needed to explore it fully so not sure how farvthe functionality goes). It’s free for personal use and easy to install.

Please just make sure it keeps updated and you use very strong credentials (long / complex passwords) for access.

Consider installing linux on his PC (Mint is very windows-like).
You can still remote in but if he's a bit vulnerable and gets taken in by a scammer their modus operandi is 99% targetted at windows users and malware is much less likely.

Good idea but I'm not sure changing his OS completely would be a realistic option unfortunately.
