And according to the (Oxford) dictionary a cafe is : a small restaurant selling light meals and drinks.

The Northern Lights isn't the Market Diner or a cafe though!

You're creating a second line of a argument and at the same time comparing apples and oranges!

We should have a restaurant that opens in to the small hours. I've had some great meals at 10/11pm in London and spanning a couple of hours with drinks and dancing at the end. Not everyone wants to eat at a glorified greasy spoon at midnight.

London is a global city, brighton is a provincial seaside town. There isn't the demand.

Oh HT, how would Mrs Tubthumper react if you promised to take her out for a restaurant meal and you took her to the Market Diner? Incidently, the Market Diner does not sell booze, I'd say that is a pretty good layman's definition of the difference between a cafe and a restaurant.

Am I correct in thinking they've tried to reclassify themselves as a bar in the past, but it was blocked because brighton has 'too many pubs'? If that is true, then it's a joke. The pubs bring a huge amount into the local economy, and a place like NL is far more worthy of a license than any of the grim dives on West Street. I like the place and would like to see it stay open, but tbf they are taking the piss with their current license. If however they are being blocked from reclassifying, it's not entirely their fault, and becomes a bit of a catch 22 for all parties.

West Street, for better or worse, serves a purpose. It makes the rest of the city a nicer place.

It's a local council policy, brought in at the time of the Licensing Act coming in, that the city council was trying to limit a fairly excessive amount of license applications. Legally, 'too many pubs' isn't reason enough on its own to reject a licensing application, but that's easily get-roundable if, for the sake of argument, the police object on any law and order issues.

I'm sure she'd appreciate the kind and generous gesture.

Anyway, HT, you're in luck. They've kept their licence, albeit with some amendments. Everyone's a winner.

Fantastic news. Thanks. What are the amendments?

I shall make a point of taking the Frau to this lovely RESTAURANT next time I'm in town.

Nothing too dramatic. I only glanced at the article. It's on the Argus website if you want it. Mainly to do with having more seating & stuff I think it said.

I guess you haven't been down East Street or the Seafront lately, the whole town is a ****ing mess. However its not because of pubs like this, its the horrible Grey Goose wanker brigade making life very hard on a night out in town.

East Street is a mess which needs pedestrianising; something the traders along there are in favour of, but something Northern Lights is against.

The whole city is not a mess. Some parts are, but to judge it on some spurious sub-group which you believe has taken over the city is ludicrous.
