My youngest granddaughter 18months old, keeps switching on power points despite us putting blank plugs in. Am i right in saying that if she put her fingers in to one of the plug sockets she wouldn't get a shock unless she formed a circuit with another of the sockets.

My wife is very concerned that she could or if she put a metal type object like a knife blade in one she could

If you say "NO" in a stern and loud voice every time she does it then that should stop her.

No, you are incorrect. If she puts a metal object in both the live and neutral holes simultaneously (of the same socket), she could complete a circuit with some very unpleasant consequences.

she only has to put something in either live or neutral to get a shock as it would pass to earth through her body. However if your electrics are up to date the MCB should trip within milliseconds thus saving her.

MCB or RCD?

Why would you get a shock off the neutral if you touched it through a socket, if its still connected at the consumer unit.

She has access to knife blades?

sorry RCD but without a RCD yes you would get a shock off neutral if that's what your question was.

Just to quantify that you will not (shouldn't) get full 240v but it can be up to approx.40v caused by induction within the circuitry. This wouldn't be fatal but would give a nice tingle.

That was just terminology I could just have easily said a knitting needle or long thin part of a toy, Obviously the stern NO is used but children do tend to push their luck and it would take a second for her to get a shock

why do you think the earth pin on a plug is longer than the other two pins....if you don't know google it.....boy I love google

Its worth remembering that the socket is already protected from metallic pins, needles etc due to the shutters that cover the live and neutral contacts. there was a you tube video out that showed you the dangers of using plug protectors which was a very interesting watch.
