My grandson has just rung me asking for famous footballers from the 1940's for his homework i cant think of anyone, does anyone know any ?
Nat Lofthouse
Played for Bolton Wanderers from 1941 in wartime games and from 1946 when 'proper' football started again.
By all accounts he was an unbelievable footballer and most famously, he shares his birthday with ME

Stretching it a little bit, from 1948 one player even had an Iron Cross.
Apart from the two already mentioned this one probably made the biggest impression on me in the 50's.
Go on Mr Hine you can get this.
Trautmann?
Was there a reason he did not fight in WWII?
Nat Lofthouse was a 'Bevin Boy', one of thousands of young men conscripted to work in Britain's mines by Ernest Bevin, the coalition government's Minister of Labour and National Service during World War II.
Smashing, thanks. I hadn't found anything much on t'internet.

He was only 14 when war broke out
He was only 14 at the start of the war anyway. He signed for Bolton the day after the war started.
