The creators of the search scheme said Mr Fossett's plane would appear as an object about "21 pixels long and 30 pixels in wingspan".

No wonder he crashed. You need a fusalage much longer than 21 pixels when crossing such a large desert. Its all about fuel capacity.

Incredibly enough you're not the only person to have thought about this, and it seems others have somehow managed to drag themselves up to your all-knowing plateau of wisdom for long enough to have released some up-to-date images.

No need to be so sarcastic.

The average internet user these days seems to assume that Google Earth images are live, same way they seem to assume that the Wikipedia tells the truth, etc, etc. Generally, the images in Google Earth are old and the high resolution ones are VERY old - and indeed, looking in to this more, the images in Google are still ancient and Amazon have provided a set of overlays they've bought that are much newer.

Yes but it works, doesn't it? Why do some people have to be so critical? It's a damn good idea, end of, and someone still has to have a go.

If you actually bother to follow the link, it says very plainly, "IMPORTANT: Please ensure that you've loaded the following KML file below in Google Earth before navigating to the co-ordinates. Otherwise, you risk looking at old and irrelevant images."
