Have you ever done time in a foreign jail?

Especially curious to hear from anyone who's been incarcerated in Turkey. Do they really BUGGER their inmates like the films suggest?

No I haven't but I know people who've been to Turkish prisons and it's no worse than anywhere else..... buggery is quite common eveywhere. Read any books about British prisons lately? There was a really good book about an Englishman's experiences in a Turkish prison (de Silva / da Silva I think his name was) which presented an alternative view to Midnight Express. Midnight Express like any film is an exaggeration. Even Alan Parker has admitted it.

What's really bad about Turkish prisons is that it is a dormitory system and very highly politicised which means political murders are quite common.

Another fact about Turkish prisons is that is some families can come and live with the convict...think that might cut down the buggery a bit, don't you?

spent about 14 hours in Dieppe cell for being asleep in a shop doorway (17 years old) the smell of piss and shit is enough to keep you on the straight and narrow

Sadly not, a night in the cells overseas is probably a bit of a rite of passage.

I wasn't one of those nabbed during a university football tour to Tenerife (I say tour - more week-long piss-up, interrupted by a game against some waiters). There was a bit of flag-stealing going on from various hotels, six or seven were detained by the Spanish authorities.

And I know a colleague at work was arrested, kept overnight and deported from the World Cup Marseilles beach war in 1998.

Spent a night in a US detention centre, long boring story but all I can say is that I can only imagine just how bad Gauntanamo Bay is. One this I can say though is that whilst I'm not the expert Simster thinks I am you will be unlikley to find a bigger group of homophobes than the prison population. Homesexual rape is very rare although consensual sex between inmates does sometimes happen. Allegedly Reggie Kray had a 'girlfriend' although he was reputed to be gay like his brother and the suicide of his wife was partly do do with it.
