Have the Seagulls Became Premier League Contenders?

Brighton’s start to the season has seen some very memorable results. Every time the club loses a key player or manager, fans fear the worst, but there seems to be a way for the team to bounce back every single time, with succession planning ensuring that the players are well-drilled and hit the ground running.

That’s exactly what has happened under Fabian Hürzeler, the Premier League’s youngest manager and one who has started life as a manager with some impressive credentials. At just 31, he did incredible things managing German side FC St. Pauli before Brighton took a punt on the relative unknown. People looking to bet on premier league football are tracking the latest football betting odds and will have seen Brighton’s odds lowering for virtually every game as they become more respected contenders in the hunt for the Premier League, but are the Seagulls actually on their way to achieve wonders?

Well, the Premier League betting odds won’t have Brighton listed as favourites anytime soon, but perhaps they have underestimated the team and the Premier League betting markets around European football will certainly have changed based on how Brighton started the season.

An Exciting Style of Play

One thing that Hürzeler has ensured is that Brighton are still a lot of fun to watch, even for neutrals. People who bet on Premier League matches will have noted the number of goals in a lot of the games as both teams often score, and Brighton games are some of the highest scoring in the league.

The new manager is clearly a purist. Brighton beat Spurs 3-2 as well as toppling Manchester United early in the season. Lots of the games have been high scoring so far and even the defeats (such as a 4-2 loss to Chelsea) have had plenty for the fans to watch.

Can Brighton Compete?

It is fair to say that there is more money changing hands in the Premier League than we have ever seen before and this includes incredibly high agent fees that clubs are now spending. The gap between the billionaire-owned clubs and some of the more modest budgets is becoming much bigger and some of these agent fees are mind-blowing.

Brighton’s spend is a fraction of what Chelsea spend on agent’s fees, for instance. Their 23/24 spend was around 1/6th of what Chelsea spent. On top of this, Brighton have not been spending the same on players and tend to rely on signing players who are not quite at the elite level, usually selling them on for a massive profit. The club has been the envy of many other teams as they have built a scouting system that consistently brings in top players.

But with losing players when they reach the elite level, such as has already happened with Caicedo and Mac Allister, Brighton are always going to struggle to make the step up to title contenders. New signings like Mats Wieffer may have a load of potential but this doesn’t always translate to results on the pitch straight away. It can take time to get things right and by that time somebody might be readying a £100 million bid.

The Next Step: Regular European Football

It is hard to know exactly what the next step is going to be for Brighton, but it is likely that if the team is going to become a genuine Premier League contender, they are going to need to regularly get into European competition.

As well as meaning more games to develop players (something that Brighton is known for), European football will also bring in a lot of income and the chance to buy more players, potentially with a bigger reputation. The model will stay the same and Brighton will only be interested in players with a resale value, but if the team can start qualifying for Europe every season, then this will enable Brighton to cut their cloth accordingly.

A Title Could Be a Pipe Dream

We’ve seen it before when Leicester achieved what people thought was impossible. They were the very definition of underdogs when they managed to win the Premier League, but this was a one off and they quickly found themselves in a relegation scrap once more.

Brighton’s incredible growth has led to people dreaming about the potential to win the Premier League. Even doing so once would be enough for most Seagulls fans! However, with the money being spent by the top teams (often on Brighton players) it is tough to predict the team ever managing to get that first place.
