I wonder if the Palace Pier owners have checked their insurance, lately..

Hasn't anyone suggested they rename it the Amex Pier yet?

By the way sad that Norman ain't with us no more, I loved his films when I was a kid. Dunno who under 40 would laugh much at "The Square Peg" now though.

I wonder if Hastings will now drown under the ubiquity of artists offering photoshopped photos of their pier burning? It sustains the entire Open House concept in Brighton.

First the West Pier, now Hastings.

My question to NSC - is it worth me booking tickets for Aladdin at the Worthing Pier's Pavilion Theatre, or will that be torched come Christmas?

After the troubles they have had and the possible lottery funding would it be wrong to speculate on an insurance fiddle

Pier not yet owned by The Trust trying to regenerate it so no benefit from an insurance fiddle ...sounds like two yobs on a drunken night out

Having spent the last 24 hours (as well as the last four years) working solidly on the pier story I can confirm:

- There is nothing to gain from an insurance job - the owners would not benefit from it and are soon to get cash in the way of a compulsory purchase order.

- The trust has not yet taken over ownership from Ravenclaw (based in Panama) and will have to wait for the council to CPO to do so.

- The trust has not had any trouble with funding, but has been stuck in something of a Catch 22 until recently - with funding not being granted until they own the pier, and the council reluctant to CPO until the trust could prove it had the cash. That WAS now moving ahead. On Monday night the trust met to finalise grant applications totalling £9.5million.

- The listed section is the underside - the struts and trusses. The bits on top were set for a revamp anyway. So all is not lost. However, nobody will know more until the full structural survey is carried out, probably next week. But the heat and sudden cooling of the steel could have caused the structure to crack.

- The two people arrested have been released on bail.

Anyone interested CLICK HERE Has a load of stuff I have been working on as well as links to the main stories in the nationals.

thats whats so sad about the timing of the fire ...and I expect the yobs havent got a clue of the true significance of the damaged caused

Seems ironic that 'dozens of homes' were left without water due to fire crews draining the local supply though.

Where's the irony in that?
I think there were about 8 crews there at one point. Seems like a fairly inevitable outcome.

Really? Not an easy one to cover, though. I had a job getting pictures. Interesting stuff you've said above, hope it's not eating all your time...

We had loads of pics but finding really good ones was hard. We got a couple which did the job. Readers were excellent at sending in stuff. Proper community journalism. Twitter went mad.

Done 16 or so web stories and a front page and an eight page souvenir pull-out for today's paper. Am looking forward to a nice lazy afternoon at Withdean tomorrow.
