Has Dick Knight run out of steam and ideas?

Is it time for Dick Knight to step down and let someone else take over the helm?

I will be forever grateful for what he has done over the past ten years, but I cannot help but feel the club has a very very stale feel about it these days. The vigour and enthusiasm which Dick Knight and co displayed until a few years ago has totally gone. All they seem to muster these days is occasional trite excuses and failed attempts in the transfer market. I'm sure it would happen to anyone given what they, and us, have been through.

Also, I am not suggesting someone should come along with fresh finances. I'm simply suggesting that someone come along with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. These commodities are free and took us a long way from when we initially moved to Withdean.

Above all, we have little to loose by getting someone else in. The club is down to its bare bones and a very poor shadow of its former self and at times looks amateur. We cannot even organise tickets sales without upsetting half the supporters.

Thanks for everything Dick but it is time to hand over the helm for the sake of the club. You have made your legend.

If "fresh ideas" means a different approach to seeing the Falmer project to its conclusion, then it would be a suicidal move to get someone new in.

How many times has this thread been re hashed under different titles.

The answer is NO he has gone so far let him see the decision through and then perhaps reconsider the future. To start again with a new man unless the whole process is started again with a new site would be disastrous.

Absolutely not, he has steered the Albion ship on the right course, negociated countless ice-bergs and guided us through many a storm, why change the captain when the final destination is in sight?

I think newbies should have to reach 100 posts before they can start threads. :jester:

Why is that doug, just so we can be sure that it isn't some gormless journo fishing for comments, or a wind up merchant!

Dont start me on my old idea that had we gone in with Tesco at the outset we would be playing ina new stadium now.

Tesco have more influence over this country than any other single party and are above the government. What they want they get.

I think you have stated some very valid points. Mr.Knight has now been in charge for around 10 years, and with the best will in the world, enthusiasm must tail off a bit. It is far too late to change re: Falmer.....and neither would I want us to now. However, I wouldn,t be opposed to Dick Knight "moving across" (and Martin Perry) to be responsible for overseeing Falmer, until planning is in place etc etc. It would be interesting to see if a new Chairman could inject new enthusiasm for the many "other" sides of this football club...i.e. ground improvements, attracting new investment, a more speculative approach to transfers and fund-raising ideas.

What would we give for another Keith Wickenden to appear on the scene.

For the younger readers he was the owner of Townsend Thorensen Ferries and was the business brain behind Mike Bamber and with the help of Harry Bloom kept MB in line and provided the funds for Alan Mullery to take us into Div 1.

That sounds like running the club more as a business investment, than a football club. I think Dick should stay as the Chairman but we need someone like Perry here permanently to work on the "other" issues. Just imagine, if we didn't have to spend the last 10 years fighting for Falmer, what other initiatives we could have come up with. It is just that for the immediate future, Falmer is the number one priority.

I thought we'd all agreed (including your family) that on that score, you're talking arse again.

No not my family you have misinterpreted what one of my sons said to you at West Ham he was generalising that I should not express an opinion not that my view was wrong.

Where would we be if we didnt all have some opinion?
