I watched it last night. Absolutely bloody mental Jap film about a football team who use kung-fu for their ball skills. So you get them jumping 30 ft in the air to smash the ball half the length of the pitch, whereupon it turns literally into a fireball travelling at about 200mph, churning up the pitch in its wake (think of the meteor in Deep Impact), before exploding the goal and blowing up the keeper in the process.

Its got superb effects as the team run, juggle and knock the ball around between them, and they score some truley ridiculous, outrageous, impossible goals. I was pissing meself laughing at some of it, but it looked REALLY COOL. Kind of like Brazil 1970 on acid.

If you see it, rent it. Its bloody hilarious.

Sorry, CHINESE then.
Anyhoo, they play the "Grand Final" in that stadium where England played a Hong Kong select XI a few years back, just before the infamous Dentists Chair incident.

Which was nice.

the trailer was on the DVD for Farenheit 911, aka: "I'm a fat, opinionated, mouthy, self indulgent, borish, arrogant, ambitious, self promoting, baseball cap and trainer wearing American millionairre who is happy to ignore any traditions of balanced, investigative journalism in favour of a narrow editorial approach to sensationalist documentary film making to produce a flick that offers nothing other than mawkish sentimentality after what is an admittedly quite facinating first 15 mins"

good trailer

hope to see it soon

Good call, Easy.

I actually plugged it on here (several times!) a couple of years ago when I got it imported from Hong Kong.

Haven't seen the Miramax version.

Originally they were going to dub it and add a new soundtrack featuring Kung Fu Fighting. :nono:

Oh, and their Amercian trailer showed all the good bits from the end! :nono:

I just found myself wishing Leon had a shot like "Iron Leg" - that volley which leaves the entire opposing team laid out like extras from Saving Private Ryan, with the goal-frame and nets twisted and destroyed in a broken, burning heap was AWESOME :lolol:

And whats with this business of letting the entire opposition team line up on the edge of the penalty area and just batter shots at the keeper totally unchallenged ? The keeper did an AMAZING job of keeping the shots out from Team Evil, but he had a right to expect a defender to at least make a challenge, instead of standing there watching open-mouthed as the opposition just stood there and peppered the goal.

And why do they keep dancing to "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang ?

Totally mental film. An absolute classic though. :D

The ending plays out to "Kung Fu Fighting", and the version I watched was dubbed. It really does have to be seen to be believed though - by using graphics for the ball, it takes things on to a whole new level from the crappy, snail-paced, choreographed football in films like Mean Machine and Escape to Victory. This stuff ROCKS. Hope they do a sequal.

:thud:

There was talk of a sequel. The original is something like 4 years old now. Won loads of awards in the far east.

Incidentally, I registered www.shaolinsoccer.co.uk two years ago and was going to do a piss-take website featuring Albion players as the characters in the movie. Er.. but I couldn't be arsed in the end. The registration has now lapsed if someone wants it!!
