We are mostly all strangers on here
Ive seen you argue plenty with ‘strangers’
Isn’t that the point of social media interaction with strangers and also friends?

Strangely defensive post?

Think you misunderstood my post - I wasn’t attacking you or talking about anyone on here so why the dig?

No need to make it personal.

I have to say, I have never, ever, opened social media with the intention of arguing with someone. I go on looking for things of interest. Unfortunately much of social media is inhabited by people who DO want to argue and often post ridiculous things just to stir the hornets nest.

We DO have such people here on NSC, which was partly why I pulled back from this site for a long time!

A question to the hive mind of nsc

Since the ability to pay for blue ticks, promotion of those people and the use of ai/bots amplifying certain themes, I have posted on it less and less. I'm kind of thinking now is the time to drop off it altogether but am interested in whether others have and if so what alternatives people used.

It may be a FOMO but when it started the idea of being able to 'text' large groups of people seemed a good thing. It doesn't feel that way now
Almost never post on it, far too many w⚓️s looking for an argument. I follow certain posters for info as it’s often the first source (I have a tiny number - less than 20 - from whom I get notifications though) and there is some interesting stuff there, but needs careful filtering.

use an ad blocker, and use following. you mostly* only see your chosen tweeters, get some suggestions on trending subjects you chose to look at.

*those you follow will retweet stuff, either it's interesting for you or if not stop following them.

I follow some decent people and people who I actually know in real life.
If I find they are retweeting things I'm not interested in, I use the 'turn off retweets' bit it their profile rather than unfollow them

I came off it a few weeks back and it's given me hours back a week I reckon. I feel a lot less connected to Brighton news though, especially on game day. The live updates were so much more convenient on X/Twitter, but now I really don't miss it. Seeing Musk going slowly insane reminded me that I just didn't want someone like him having that connection into my world.

It took a while though because I wanted to delete all of my tweets, reposts and likes beforehand but the actual act of quitting it was quite freeing.

I used to love twitter. Hung around a lot with the gambling community and it was so much fun. The fake betting market we created that was taken seriously by a publication, getting Geoff Banks bet to bite so we could all laugh at him, cricket puns and numerous posters responding with 80s bands to one poster whenever he posted something serious. Juvenile but fun. Most of us are gone having migrated from the Betfair forum in the first place.

Now it's just politics central. Even my Albion only account is full of political shit no matter how much I try and prune it so I now go on it on match day and that's about it. Despite being an Albion account it tries to get me to follow Elon Musk FFS.

The internet used to be great fun. Now it's over run by politics bores . Bring back internet v1.0

Stopped using FB in the middle of lockdown. Never going back.

Have a Twitter 'burner' account. No followers, never post but use it to read things sent to me. I've also blocked and muted enough right wing twerps to mostly only get cricket, football and F1 on my 'for you' feed. Will never go back to posting, try not to read blue ticks or click on ads.

Never been an instagrammer either but do use NSC (obviously) and LinkedIn.

Ive come off all social media except NSC and Youtube. It’s been great!
Me too, coming up to a year now. Never felt like I’ve had more time. It’s crazy how much time is wasted on social media. It’s helped me be a lot more ‘present’ at work and in my home life, which has improved my performance and also my relationships 🙂 initially it was a test for a month or 2 to see if I could do it, now genuinely I don’t think I’ll ever go back on it.

The key to all social media is curating your contacts. I'm still on Twitter but many friends of mine have left it or have never used it. I use it for sport, mainly the Albion and the Washington Commanders for which it is brilliant. I also use it for politics and follow loads of left-wing posters on there. I use block and mute a lot. I've been pretty lucky with the algorithm of late.

One key for maintaining sanity on Twitter, is do not engage with toxic posters. Ignore, scroll past, block or mute, do not ever get in argument with someone on twitter (it may not even be a real person), it just isn't worth it. For me I still find it a useful way to keep up with what's going. If your feed gets polluted though it can be soul destroying, if you find it getting you down, quit it.

I like instagram, it's pic based and is broadly a positive space for sharing. Facebook I use for keeping up with friends, I'm on it less than I was but I still enjoy popping on now and again to see what's happening. Again the key is curating your friends list and getting rid of the people who do not interest you.

Has anyone on this thread who has been using Twitter for business purposes with a 'paid for' blue tick, recently stopped paying / paused use etc? Be interested to know any tips / approach with other SM / response from followers or otherwise etc.

I don’t use Facebook, Twitter/X or Instagram and never have done. In fact my only online interaction is good old NSC. I have come under pressure from friends and business associates to engage with social media but I have always resisted and I firmly believe that my life and my mental health is far better for it. Yes, I’m boring.

Came off it 6/7 months ago……easier than I thought it was going to be….not missed..apart from when people part quote stuff on here about football and the only way to see the whole story is by signing in, which I refuse to do.

oh and the decision had nothing to do with Musk

Been off it for a long time. And never been on any other social media beyond here. Thoroughly recommend getting off social media. In general I feel better informed and healthier.

Twitter had aleady turned into a cesspit. And now it's a cesspit owned by a c*unt. I won't be going back anytime soon.
