Hartlepool points ruling latest

League One side Hartlepool United have been given two dates next week for their case concerning the fielding of an ineligible player to be heard. Pools were due to respond to charges brought against themselves and defender Gary Liddle on Monday, after he was included in an Easter Monday line-up against Brighton and Hove Albion whilst suspended from first team matches.

The expectation had been for the Football Association to dish out an immediate three point deduction for the offence at the start of this week. It would appear that Hartlepool have requested a personal hearing into the matter.

They've now been given two separate hearings. The first will be hosted by the Football League on Tuesday 4th May, whilst the second will be staged by the Football Association on Thursday 6th May.

Both Hartlepool and Liddle have been charged with a breach of FA Rule E10 – failure to comply with a decision of The Association. The accusation will be that both parties had an obligation to be aware of when suspensions for players kicked in, and so to ensure that Liddle did not appear on the Easter Monday teamsheet. Pools are claiming that as the FA only sent through the list of suspended players on the Tuesday after the holiday weekend, they were unaware of Liddle's suspension.

So ignorance is now an accepted excuse or defence despite knowing the rules and regulations about when a suspension kicks in following accumilation of points or red cards.

I'm glad we're not in a position to be NEEDING them to be docked points, or to have points handed to us. But BG is right. Ignorance is NOT an excuse or a defence in this. Clubs have been thrown out of Cup competitions for the same reason, so this should incur a serious punishment.

It should be a mandatory 3 point deduction. And I don't mean suspended either.

Great plan - wait until after the end of the season. Dish out a pnealty that by then is certain to have no effect on anything and everyone is happy (NOT)

3 points off them now would but them back in the mix for relegation. Wait until the end of the season and I am certain that they will not have -3 points if that relegates them after all games have ended.

Typical of the football authorities, isn't it.
This match was over THREE WEEKS ago, and they still havn't decided. Its exactly the same as the Tevez saga, whereby the FAPL were clearly hoping that if they left a decision long enough, West Sham would already be relegated anyway without them taking off any points. Look how that turned out.

Pathetic.

As a punishment on top of the 3 points that they gained that should be taken back automatically.

Dont think that will happen as it will put them back into the relegation scrap especially if they dont win on Saturday and the FA and the FL are cowards.
Both parties the FA and the FL should have held the case as a matter of urgency before Saturday. Having received their request should have convened a meeting within 72 hours and it is very easy to do, stating that if they do not attend the case would be heard in their absence based on the facts as they have them. Hartlepool and the player would have attended for sure.

Im suprised the other clubs in the relegation scrap are not making more of an issue of this at the moment.

They will if they are within three points of Hartlepool and get relegated. Would be a bit premature to complain about a decision that has not been made.

The thing is they have a better chance of getting points with the pressure off them to some extent. If the 3 points had been taken away then the results of the pressure on the next two games would have been extreme.

It's brilliant isn't it?

Hartlepool United have to answer to the FA, and Gary Liddle has to answer to the Football League - for the same offence.

Only in England...

2 seperate governing bodies Hartlepool are responsible for their players under the terms of the FA but Liddle has broken FL rules by playing when he was suspended. Had to happen that way because of the make up of football in this country. If it had happened in an FA cup match or a league run by the FA the FA would have dealt with all of it.

I can't believe that there's not a statratory penalty for such an offence
