To my utter shock, I discovered yesterday that Harrys English Restaurant in Hove has shut down

Totally gutted.... Loved the place... Decent food, and the waitresses generally were worth a look too...

any thoughts....??

wow....back in the day i used to be pretty hammered on a sunday morning and their super grill ups saved my life many times.

will never forget after an "all nighter" my mate going white in there and walking off to puke in the bogs.

top food, and about 8 years ago a really beautiful waitress too.

everyone goes to starbucks and tescos then moan when decent places shut.....shop local and support independent businesses.....or we will all live in an orwellian nightmare of pret a manger, starbucks, and mcdonalds soon.

I supposed didn't move on.

Tons of competition from there from independent restaurants and cafes too. Surprised more don't go bust with high rent & rates before they even get custom in this difficult climate.

Sadly, a common story in our current financial climate. I work in the same industry, and the last few years have been tough. We've all had to adapt and literally fight to get punters through the door. Unfortunately, the days when money would just fall in your tills are long gone, and many smaller traders just didn't react to the change in the mentality of our customer base. A prime example is when the smoking ban came in, 35% of our business dissapeared over night in the on sale industry, the trick was to find a new market, the obvious one was the family market, after all, more parents are likely to take their kids into a none smoking environment than pre ban. It worked for us after a long hard slog, but some traders just got left behind, with dire consequences. A real shame.

I went there at the end of January - it was a Friday night and there were 8 of us. Apart from two tables of 2 people who were there when we arrived at 7.30pm and a group of 4 people who turned up just before 9.00pm the place was empty. We did think that if this was a normal Friday night for them the writing was on the wall. The service was fine and friendly enough but the food wasn't great, especially considering they weren't exactly rushed off their feet in the kitchen. The menu looked as though it hadn't changed much for years apart from the daily 2 for 1 deals they were offering which was another warning sign! Its a shame but it felt as though it had had its day and hadn't moved on given all the other restaurants in Brighton & Hove.

2-4-1 deals are the norm now bud, if you don't do deals like that, you won't last very long!

I am utterly shocked by this.

Did any regular users like me see this coming? Whenever I have used it, mainly during weekend mornings and weekend day time, it has been rammed.

All of my friends know how much I love this place, and I have typed about my love of their Pile Up breakfast on here many times.

This is a very sad day for me.

It depends what your target customer is though.

You need to aim deals at ALL of your different customers these days by running multiple deals at the same time. For example, food deals for your families and office workers, drinks deals for your younger clientele and your retired day time drinkers. But you also have to give people a better experience than you competitors do,as they say...service is king, without that, you will fail.

Bugger! Only recently discovered this gem. The best cooked breakfast I have ever eaten outside of my own home. Was planning to regularly start home games there, grab a 25 bus, beers in the Swan, then grab my seat in WSU, oh well

Sent from Pippa Middleton's lingerie drawer.

Exactly the same experience I had on my most recent visit. I used to like it, but my last visit was underwhelming. Shame, but life goes on.

My sons swear the best breakfast pre match is a pub in Southover St, cant remember its name. I think it is about £6 help yourself, all you can eat.

Started going down hill when they stopped selling draft Harveys. Last time I went there it was just FULL of screaming children and the service was crap.

Shame, used to be good.
