This guy arrived post pre-season and there is no way anyone has a right to rate him till 12 months from now in my view.

Not going to argue on it but he's a "seasoned" pro, not an 18 year old. Would pre season make a difference to his current performance? CMS, Buckley (albeit injured) and last season Barnes, Noone, KLL all made a pretty immediate impression.

Anyway you think he's OK ... I think he's pants .. agree to differ

Personally I think he has some talent. He has already scored two goals for us and I am not aware of any midfielder who is the equal of that. He obviously has weaknesses but I would imagine that any £250k midfielder playing in the Championship is likely to have those. On what I have seen he can have a decent touch on and pass of the ball. His penalty miss was poor but my recollection is that we have had a lot of penalty misses in the last season or two so that should not be held against him.

I think a problem is that the typical English fan looks for a modest, hardworking midfield player, who runs a lot, tackles, gives safe and secure passes and who is decent in the air. I am not sure that Harley does too much of that but his game seems to me to be one of ball control and delicate passing at the forward end of midfield where margins are smaller and rewards are greater. I have seem him be effective and I would say his variety provides a welcome addition to the squad. Were Vincente be fit he would however not be playing.

I think the problem with Harley, along with the rest of the squad, is the pace of the passing.
We need to get zippier

I get the feeling that opinions are well and truly cemented on Harley and he'll never get a fair trial on NSC except from a few of the more sensible posters.
He could have 5 consecutive MOM performances in the next 5 games and most on here would still want rid.
I read the player ratings thread after the Reading game, and Harley got his usual pasting from a lot of NSC'ers, including some giving 0/10.

That was patently ridiculous.

My son-in-law came to the Reading game with me, he's a Newcastle fan and it was the first time he had watched Brighton, so he had no previous tainted perception of any Brighton player.
Bear in mind this was just on the day, not a reflection of a season, but his post match opinion was that Adam El Abd was far and away our worst player closely followed by Tarrico, albeit for different reasons.
El Abd because he was directly or indirectly culpable for all 3 Reading goals and Mcanuff was running past him for fun, and Tarrico because he struggled to contain Kebe until Kebe lost interest in the game, and from then on Tarrico just fell over every 2 seconds looking for free kicks.
My son-in-law didn't mention Harley at all in his post match views until I asked him what he thought of him, to which he replied he didn't remember a single thing about his performance ... which I grant you is not a good thing for a supposed playmaker ... but it doesn't make him absolute gash either.

Harley didn't make any terminal mistakes (unlike El Abd), the Reading midfield did NOT run the game (their wingers did), so picking on Harley is unjust.
He didn't play well ... he didn't play bad, he was just anonymous, but so was Spaz, so was KLL (mostly), so was Buckley....

Give Harley a break.
I think there is something in there ..... we just need to find the key to bring it out.
Maybe giving him our support might actually work wonders?

Is there a conspiracy amongst some on here to set a record for starting a record number of negative threads about one of our players. This is the third since Boxing Day and the umpteenth since Harley joined us - pathetic.

Harley looks like he has some calmness on the ball, I agree with one of the earlier posters, you should not always expect a player to come into a side and make an immediate impact, just look at some of the great players, Ronaldo was rubbish when he first joined united but flourished after a season or 2, same with Nani, granted different style of player and standard but Harley isn't at United and playing premiership football, if he was able to do that he would still be at Swansea.

Some players need time, changes in lifestyle, different team, different region all make an impact and as much as we may think well they are a proffesional so it's their job, they should just do it, they are still humans that need to feel settled etc and the performances will come. You could probably name some of the greatest players in the world that would have been nothing if they weren't in a specific team at a specific time, just look at Kurt Nogan, what did he do when he left Brighton, nothing if my memory serves me correctly!!!

Ignoring the never-fit Vicente, Ryan Harley is esily the best passer of a ball at the club. He needs to work much harder though to earn the right to show it.

I like him, have done for a while. He's just the scapegoat. No doubt had Barnes of been playing more in recent times he would still be the victim, speaking of Barnes, is he still our top scorer despite not getting a goal for about 3 months?

Joint top with CMS I think, 7 each?
CMS = 6 in the league, 1 in the League Cup
Barnes = 5 in the league, 2 in the League Cup.

I think Harley was way off the pace and wasn't able to adapt to our style of play and as a result his passing was not good enough and this has lead to a loss of confidence by him and by most of our supporters (if this thread is anything to go by). However, I think we are starting to see some shards of light now, IMHO some of his recent performances have been better.

The fact is most players need to adapt their game when they switch clubs and have to work with a different mentality and playing styles, Harley is no different.

Personally, I'd stick with him.

Barnes needs to play up front full stop and not end up on the right wing and i'm sure he would score again and would probably help CMS score as well.

I think he's got great potential, just needs to pick up the pace a bit, get goalside more often when we don't have the ball and tackle more!

So, he needs to become a completely different player?

I think Harley will be a good player for us when he tunes into what we're trying to do. The first 5 minutes against Burnley, he looked a real player and it was such a shame that he had to be sacrificed in favour of functionality. He would have had an absolute stormer against that lot and I feel a bit sorry for him that the chance was taken away from him. He'll come good, there's deffinitely a footballer in there.
