I've been there a few times, I know I have, but it's the sort of place you tend to forget.

Looking through the records I see we won 3-1 in our 78/79 season and & I know i was there as saw all the games but can't remember it, even though it was a midweek.

The season before we drew 1-1 in a hardfought match and i was on the old 'Stavros' Seagull Special. i remember us chasing the Oldham fans up the road 7 i was quite nimble in those days and found myself ahead of the crowd and getting isolated.

Had to have a reality check. To run on would run the risk that they may just turn on me or i might just get arrested. reckoned it was a good time to run out of breath!

The only other memory from Oldham came on another trip and this must serve as a HEALTH WARNING to anyone going tomorrow. We were in a pub and somebody ordered a good old Northern steak pie only to find it was full of a scalding hot brown liquid. A heated debate ensued. the pub landlord claimed it was gravey whilst the Albion fan (still a regular) had a brown stained shirt.

In these days it would be a compensation case. in those days the landlord called the police.

BTW, Swansea, much like Oldham, few memories. I do remember us winning 3-1 when we played some sparkling stuff having been relegated along with Swans from the old Div 1 the previous year.

In that relegation year we also won 2-1 at the Vetch yet the crow, in the top division, was less than 9k. main memory of Swansea was how the police used to fence off a few streets and we were free to roam in that cordon. Quite revolutionary at the time, we were even allowed in pubs. In some of the streets the locals would still leave their front doors open. How times have changed.

Oldham 2 - 4 Albion
2 goals from Eddie Spearritt, and 1 each from Bert Murray and Peter O'Sullivan kept the coach-load of Albion fans warm on a bitterly cold day.
Unfortunately, a disgruntled Oldham tosser heaved a brick through the coach windscreen after the game, and we had to travel home with a piece of polythene covering the hole. We had to keep stopping at service areas to defrost the driver. Arrived back in Brighton at about 4am.

Remember seeing us lose 2-1 in the 4th Round of the FA Cup on the plastic pitch in 1990. I think we were 1-1 for a while until the rain came down. They really knew how to exploit the surface. Long, flat balls over the heads of the centre backs which skidded on. Their forwards never challenged in the air - they just ran straight through knowing that if we missed it they would be clean on goal.

Ugly game, ugly ground, ugly pies (we had pie issues too!), ugly accent. Enjoy it today!
