I never really warmed to the guy as he appeared to have a charisma bypass and no sense of humour.

In hindsight, with the financial constraints, I am pleased to admit he did a decent job. He found two sets of strikers (Nelson/Bremner; Small/Byrne) that were right up there in the top 4 partnerships of my 50 years attending (Ward/Mellor; Zamora/Hart being the others). That 2nd half 3 goal spell destroying Millwall in the playoffs is possibly the best 7 minutes I ever saw at the Goldstone (or at least 2nd only to 2 goals against Liverpool in 84).

My recollection was that Hart & Zamora, rarely if ever partnered one another.

Hart played wide, with Zamora either upfront on his own or partnered with Freeman or Steele.

We had a school venture week in June 1988 and along with about 20 others, was allocated to the ‘Soccer Week’
This basically meant playing football solidly for 3 days, but on the last two days we had trips to have a tour at two league grounds. The first was a trip to the Goldstone. It was absolutely falling apart and the players gym was worse than we had at school, but I loved it. We also got to meet Barry, and he introduced himself accordingly which was met by a chorus of “Barry who?” from some of the less intelligent lads. I felt for him as it was very embarrassing.

The next day we went to White Hart Lane and were told in no uncertain terms that if we met their manager, anyone who uttered “Terry who?” would be expelled!

We didn’t actually get to meet Venables, but we did chat to Gary Stevens, Paul Walsh, Chris Waddle, and the mullets of the latter two as well.
Happy days.

The last time I saw Barry was when we played away to Fulham in the cup in the mid 90s - he was sitting on a bench near the river, and Robert Codner was also in the vicinity.

Just come up on my Facebook feed, 72 years young 👍

Happy to say that time has been a great healer, when this is all over I look forward to sitting down with the old boy and talking football, he’s amazing company and extremely knowledgeable.

Absolutely this. Much derided by some when manager at the Albion, but was doing a thankless task in my opinion, and in the last cpouple of seasons or so was under a lot of pressure, which l think told on him to a large degree.

I met him again a few seasons ago when l was on the gate at Horsham YMCA, he was far more relaxed than when l'd met him previously, and we had a really good chat about football. No airs or graces and a really likeable chap.
