Wow is he really that old? Great and experienced keeper who came to us at the right time - agile and confident.

I jest. GM was great on his day, but ES was my first keeper, . . . Strangely I fancied myself as a bit of a keeper as a 9-10 year old and was impressed by a keeper at an Albion game most by ??? Phillips. He made an amazing save which stuck in my head for years . . . .

Edit, John Phillips, only played one game!

The extent of my goalkeeping as a kid was full length cat-like dives across my bed, probably to a mimicked Goldstone roar.

And on Oct 7 let's raise a glass to this legend, in goal for my first Albion games, a one club man.

And here is an interview with him!

And he's our record appearance keeper. Succeeded by PG of this thread.

For the emotion of the time and his role in it, my favourite Albion GK is the one and only FDR, though

Just Wikipedia’d him, despite the presence of The Cat, he still managed to play 125 games for Chelsea between 1970-80, but that solitary appearance for us on the last game of 1980 at The Goldstone.

Sad to see that he passed away in 2017 after a long illness aged 65. 😞
