it is ok on short haul flights but not having a book to read on long haul would be a killer. Also, what happens to duty frees bought after check in?

Why not just ban all liquids and electrical goods from hand luggage. Banning people taking books on board is complete bollocks.

Are they going to raise the weight allowance for hold luggage to take this into account? If not then the aircraft will be saving money on fuel so this should be passed on to the consumer. If the prices stay the same this is a complete rip-off.

This is only for flights to and from the UK, right? I am not pleased in the slightest

That kind of fucks things up for Easyjet, RyanAir and BMI baby who have been trying to get everyone to have ONLY hand luggage on their flights.

Well I just flew in from Latvia on BA today. No liquid allowed but otherwise it was hand luggage as normal.

I suspect it will be stricter leaving the UK.

These things never seem to work as the authorities plan - I speak from the experience of coming into London on an Italian flight where the cockpit door was wide open all the way. The date: Sept 14th 2001.

You can easily kill someone with a rolled up newspaper, if you are that way inclined, you can also secrete items about your person that might be used as weapons.

I'd be very annoyed if books can't be taken on flights, i'm planning on taking one when i go on holiday to past the time!

If they want to check it to make sure i haven't cut out a big square in the middle to make sure i'm not hideing anything then i will be happy to let them check, aslong as my bookmark don't fall out!

I'm hoping they're going to relax the hand luggage allowances after next week (when these planned attacks were meant to take place). I'm flying to South Africa in a few weeks, don't think I could cope without so much as a book.

At the moment any flight from the UK (except those going to the US) is allowing items brought in the departure lounge to be carried on as hand luggage.

Funnily enough, you're right. By leaning out of my aisle seat I could see out of the cockpit window as we came into land. Reassuringly, not a skyscraper in sight...
