So do I, IF he is given the right partner. I don't think we have the right partner for him at the club.

agree with that - he didnt look any better alongside fraser yesterday. infact, when fraser has partnered him in the midfield i cant remember him playing any better

Because Fraser is too small to play the defensive role effectively. He seems to be a reasonable footballer, but I don't see him as the hardman at the back of midfield allowing Hammond to get forward.

What?

You do not need to be tall to play the holding role in midfield, Oatway for us? Hargreaves for England? Batty? Ince?

At present with Fraser it is more a case of lacking a bit of upper body strength, but that should come.

I think maybe Fraser needs to be given a run there so as he can learn how to impose himself physically in that role. You don't have to be massivley strong to play that role if your timing and reading are good.

And by reading I don't mean he's finished all the Harry Potter books quicker than the rest of the youth team..

On yesterdays evidence Loft would compliment Hammond or Fraser better than having Hammond and Fraser together.

Still think Paul Reid could do a job in there somewhere though.

Fraser in centre mid allows Hammond to get forward more which I think he will start to do more the longer the pair play together and the more Hammond begins to 'trust' leaving the defensive duties to Fraser.

Strength, height etc is not an issue with Fraser. Look at Makelelle - hardly big built was he? People often assume the defensive players needs to be strong. Not so. He needs to be able to read the game and break up attacks by getting a foot in, holding players up and intercepting. None of which require huge physical strength.

fraser and reid would be to lightweight in midfield, but why anyone would want to replace hammond in the midfield is unbelivable

he would be one of the 1st names on my team sheet every week,he gets stuck in and does the simple things that people take for granted.he should be more forceful when going forward though has the abilty and power to go though defences in a similar way to stevie g but seems to lack confidence to do that on a regular basis and also needs to shoot more often when he gets in the box

as for the penalty thing a goal is a goal how many penaltys have been missed this season? he has 5 goals from midfield this season which is a decent return

I think there are a lot of people on this thread kidding themselves about how good or how bad Hammond is.

He has got great attacking midfield potential at this level.
He often goes anonymous trying to play the wrong role.

In my eyes this makes him an average player unless he can become more consistent.

I agree, although being average does make him better than a fair percentage of the rest of squad in my opinion and losing him would be a blow.

Inconsistancy is the problem with all the team at the moment.

We have some very very good players at this club, all of which have the ablity to turn a game, as well as Hammond we have Jake and Coxy.

As much as it is frustrating these players are going to be the ones who are going to see us through the next few seasons. I personally believe that they will come good.

I agree, he is still only young and Im sure he will become more consistent if given time.

Hammond is one of our best players. Whether or not that makes him an average player at this level is besides the point.

We will miss him and we won't replace him with someone as good.

I would like to see Reid on the right and perhaps an older, wise head in the middle to add some stability and to guide the younger players through. Someone like Forster who may not play all the games but adds vast experience and solidity to the team and squad would be great.

Never thought I would say this but an Oatway type. That's in terms of what he was looking like on the pitch towards the end of his career rather than the fart gags and KFC jokes.

Tommy Doherty would be good
