Guy Butters for defense coach

Indeed. If Butters hadn't played for us I wonder if people would be saying the same? An ex player with loads of experience at all levels, a player who read the game rather than just relying on physicality attributes. Seems like just the job to me.

And with hindsight our old boy non league set up last season can't have been so bad, since with pretty much the same defenders we were able to sometimes keep clean sheets and not look like conceding from any cross that goes into the box.

last season Guy Butters was at the club playing still. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but i believe without him last year we would have let in a lot more goals. He may not have played every week but his experience would sure as hell been passed onto Elphick and Lynch. He was the slowest player iv ever seen but did he ever get caught for pace? No because he reads the game superbly. If he came in to coach our defence i would be delighted.

If you are qualified to coach primary school kids then I'm guessing you have at least Level 1? If that's the case then you are not qualified to coach professionals!! He has taken all his courses so far with fellow pro's and managers, the courses are designed to suit the fact that they are professionals and are done differently to kind of course you would have taken so I'd say he is more than up to the job......not that I'm saying he deserves it just because he is an ex player!!! 20 years experience in the game obviously doesnt count for much in a lot of peolples eye either does it?!!!

I have done my level 1 indeed. Fair play to him for taking the rest of the badges. Something I want to do too.

I am just saying that we keep employing people with no experience and it has made the wheels fall off.

20 years of experience in the game is always seen as valuable, but he and all other players need to learn to translate that into coaching. Not everyone does it succesfully. Top players use their reputations to get managerial jobs, and it doesnt always work out. Some times it does of course. Some rubbish players even non players make great coaches.

We are not in a position to keep taking gambles, hoping these inexperienced people MIGHT be good. We need proven people who have been there done that on a coaching/managerial type role to help us.

Guy may well be a good coach one day, but surely chucking someone like him into the deep end and relying on him to turn things around is a massive ask on him even with all his PLAYING experience.

I take it, if he was to coach at Albion, it would be his first league roll as a coach. If it goes wrong, then his stock goes down, and he will find it hard to get another job at the same level or higher?

Then again, he could be brilliant, turn us into a solid unit, and everything goes well. It is a huge GAMBLE that is all I am saying

I would be very happy to see Butter's back here doing this sort of job.
I think the younger players have gone backwards since he has gone and I wonder how much that is due to not having an older head at the back guiding and encouraging them, like I think Guy did very well.
Hinshelwood is a great example, he certainly does not look the player he was with Guy along side him, but maybe it is the injury that has affected him.

No? Now Guy had many positive attributes but to say he never got caught for pace is re-writing history in Stalinist proportions...

hmm i was abit misleading with that comment. But what he used to do was drop off the player approaching him rather than rush towards them and leave himself open to be turned inside out. By dropping off and often forcing them wide of goal he would divert the danger. I hope that makes sense.....

I'd alot rather prefer an experienced coach, who has no links with the club. Look were it got us getting someone who used to be with us.

From what I understand both Butters and Oatway are UEFA B level 3 qualified coaches -Dean White was supposed to be on the one I attended (Jul 07) but didn't turn up probably as Albion were doing pre season stuff. Booker?? unknown

I'm sure Hinsh learned a lot from Guy,but having only played a handful of games in 3 seasons,it is naturally going to take him a bit of time to get back to his former self.

The last people who had previously played for the club, then joined the management team with any real sense of responsibility were, um, Dean Wilkins and Ian Chapman.

Are they still here???

Micky Adams was at the club, then came back and now look at the table.

I don't anybody is saying he should not be employed by us purely because he used to play for us.

I think the general point is he should not be employed JUST because of that.

I don't think anyone is saying that either.

As I, and others, have already said...

Yes. If he is the best man for the job and if Dick Knight is even looking for a defensive coach, then get Guy on board. I don't see it could do any harm in the short term for either party.

I just think it would be healthy for the club, come the Summer, to have a clean sweep of the squad and the backroom staff.

Whoever is made manager needs to be allowed to bring his own men in.
