If he has actual proper qualifacations (like in coaching, not sewing or English literature or anything pansy like that), then BUTTERS IN. If not, could he come back and give us a bit of half-time entertainment anyway?

I'll have you know I worked bloody hard to get my GCE BA (Hons.) NVQ III GBH in English Sewing Literature, so take that back, or some stitching will be wending your way :lolol:

Means his mrs is more likely to spend more time on here...

JOKE.

Having thought about it - Why the hell not? He did seem to be a calming influence on our young defenders and certainly helped McShane, Lynch and Elphick.

We need someone to be telling the defenders when to play safe etc and that sort of thing comes with experience.

Give him a bell and see if he fancies coming over and doing a few sessions. Don't necessarily have to give him a long-term contract.

Hate to say I told you so but I suggested that we needed a defensive coach some few years ago when we had Jason Dodd here and he was always injured. The response I got was that he would be an expense that we couldnt afford. The fact that Arsenal used Don Howe so effectively to win titles meant nothing and now all of a sudden some expert on here has come up with this great new idea and revelation.

.

Matt Heath was doing that all of last night to both El Abd and Borrowdale in the 2nd half that I ciould hear so possibly was with Whing. The unfortunate thing is Whing appearred to have had a reasonable game but 2 of the goals came from him failing to clear the ball, 1st and 3rd and the 2nd from the positon that he should have been occupying.

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
I'm not quite sure just why we are clutching at straws here.

Lets face it, we are a L1/L2 club paying 'defenders' over £1500 a week each.

Now call me naive, its a bit like teaching your granny to suck eggs, if they are not good enough, cannot be motivated by a manager/coach and various other lackies and hangers on (i.e Bob Booker) then perhaps a change of career (or a loan spell with Havant and Waterlooville) is on the cards.

I just cannot see the justification here (as much as I LOVE the big guy)

That's quite a volte-face.

Are you being threatened?

Not at all.

I never said he should NOT be signed, just not signed because he used to play for us.

If, as it turns out, he has the correct badges then by all means get him along for a couple of sessions (I wouldn't get him on a contract or anything).

We have got Oatway back for what seems like moral reasons. I would suggest getting Butters back to spend a few sessions with the defence would be more worthwhile.

In summary? I wouldn't get him on board as a coach. But getting him to come and take a few sessions? Can't hurt.

BUT only if Slade wants to.

Does he not already work for the club in some capacity ??

Just change his job title a bit

Well all i can say is that he cant do any worse than what we have already and the big positives are:

1. Experienced
2. Respected
3. Known to some of the players
4. Cheap resource (Sorry Race !)
5. Top bloke

Players like El-Abd, Elphich, Hinsh, Lynch etc he knows and played with so know their strenghts and more importantly their weakness.

Give the old man a job

Even top players need coaching, why shouldn't ours?

Our defence is still made up of kids.

Well, people still in the first half of their career. Experience is a great asset, but until then, they still need (at times, basic) coaching.

Fully agree. Also, the last sentence is pretty obvious as I don't think Tank would get a job if Slade didn't want him.

BTW re: Charlie Oatway, did you mean moral or morale reasons?

Just far enough away from LDC
The decision to release Butters left us short in defence - the lack of experience (from him or anybody) has cost us dear

I was under the impression initially, that the hole left by Butters going was to be filled by either Hawkins or Virgo, but that hasnt materialised, and now the management have realised and plugged the gap with Heath, who I feel will do an andequate job.

I can understand him being released.

One, he wanted to play when his body (he is VERY old) said 'do some coaching instead, Lardy'. He has been crocked for most of the season. Two, Wilkins would hardly talk to him so he was unlikely to stay when, three, Wilkins either had someone else lined up or felt Chapman was going to to an adequate job.

Get the fat fucker back now.
