Gus, on promotion

So gus has commented again on how "were not ready" for promotion.

So what would happen if we were to make the play offs? Play the development squad so we dont go up? What about our remaining games? How much effort do the players put it to acheive promotion, if thats not the aim?

I also read somewhere that we should look at Swansea's foray into the prem. A few good years in the championship becoming a strong, well established side and then able to sustain a decent position in the prem. All well and good but they failed to mention about Norwich who also acheived back to back promotions into the prem. Were they "ready" to go up. Same scenario as Brighton, roughly, and they are holding 8th position comfortably. You cant tell me that norwich are bigger than us or better equipped for the premiership?

Im sure i'll be put right by the masses on NSC, Thanks in advance

Very few teams in the Championship are ever "ready" for promotion.

Clever words from Gus to take pressure of the team.

Norwich's squad which went into League 1 had Championship quality players already, they added a few more and won the league. Then they added a few more to get promoted again and added again this summer. They've had evolution, we're in the process of revolution. Our League 1 squad when Gus came here was crap. It was only 2 years ago, let's stay realistic. We had a crap ground, a crap squad and ambition without substance when Poyet got here. Remain calm. If we go up, we'll spend wisely and improve many areas. It might be fruitless, but we'd be run properly and we'd have a go.

Don't be ridiculous. If we get to the playoffs we get to the playoffs. We play to win and if we win we go up. If you're 'ready' to be playing in the premier league every week then the chances are you're either in the premier league or you've run away with the championship.

If we go up then we bring in new players in the summer and aim to finish 17th on goal difference as a minimum.

Are you seriously suggesting that the club/players would deliberately throw games to stay in the Championship? That would be insulting to the competition, the opposition and most importantly, us the fans.

In the summer we are going to lose Bridcutt-Dunk-Noone-CMS-Caskey,we will not be in this position this time next year enjoy it while it lasts .I`ve supported the Albion since 79 and it don`t last long, get promoted this year or wait along time before the chance comes around again.

Go up and follow the Blackpool model.

Low wage cap and if we get relegated we still make £80 million with the £40 million for finished bottom and 4 years of parachute money. A big chunk of the ground could be paid for with one season in the top flight.

Who would like the sound of that gamble? Do you think our chairman is a world class poker player or summit?

You say it like it's a done deal, and you know for a hard and fast fact that those players are going.

The clubs chasing them are either premiership or championship offering significantly higher wages so yes, a footballers career is a short one the novelty of the shiny new stadium has worn off, they will want success and high wages as all players do.The players we have on loan will also be gone, our best chance is for promotion this year then strengthen the squad for the premiership with money received. But Gus and Tony already know that

Just because he feels we are not ready does not mean he won't jump at the opportunity should it arise. He is setting expectations and keeping the players in their place and I agree with him but I would taking promotion in a flash if it comes.

It's a win/win/win statement

Don't make the play offs = I told you so
Make the play offs and lose = I told you so
Make the play offs, win, get promoted and then get relegated = I told you so
Make the play offs, win, get promoted and stay up = look what I did with a team not ready

tbf he'd look a complete dick if he said anything else

If that's a gamble I now realise what I've been doing wrong. Straightforward business decision, can't see any downside apart from a bit of bruised ego for a while, even that gets forgotten uber quick

No im not, so wind your neck in big boy!

I was just trying to fully understand Gus' comments on how he sees our promotion challenge this year after his "were not ready"comments. Ive never understood the concept of not wanting promotion, personally i think its garbage!

Again you're saying this like it's obvious and well-known hard and fast facts.

You also make it sound like the status of the loan players is a done and dusted thing.

Face it, you don't know at all. You're making assumptions.

rather than such a poor response why not explain your reasoning?

I honestly didn't think it needed explaining, such was the obvious answer.

For the kernel of the point, read the first part of Ninja Elephant's post further up the page.

Of course Norwich is a bigger club, historically and financially. We've been the size of club that we are now for... ooh, about half a season.

100% Agree with this. What else was he supposed to say? Great management, taking the pressure off of the players.
