Which nation do us English share our greatest sporting rivalry?

You can interpret the question however you like and I realise that in reality it differs depending on the sport, but if you had to pick one nation, who would it be?

Plumped for Australia as i spose the cricket fans have too. I loved it when we beat them at Rugby as soon we'll have a cricket team to rival them again.

The Aussies, there is an arrogance about their cricket team that makes me want to smack all 11 of them in the face no matter which 11 they pick (Bevan excluded, he's a nice man)... Never get that feeling about any other team in any other sport.

Probably Australia or Scotland if you count all sports. Obviously different if it's only football.

Very difficult all have a certain something to them, the Aussies for me is a friendly rivalry but in Cricket and Rugby there is nobody better to beat but there is not really any football rivalry.

Ireland, Scotland for me the rivalry is a bit more deep and can brew over into real nastiness on the odd occasion particularly in Football and Rugby the Welsh don't really count do they i mean you can not really hate them (except Cardiff).

The Argies and French ran them close but the team i really love us to beat is the Germans there are so many reasons and we always seem to play them in important games.

5-1

Nah its the krauts. Hate them. Two world wars, one world cup. 5-1 in Munich was one of the happiest days of my life. Losing to them at Wembley and having the kraut b'stards sing 'football's coming home' in perfect english hurt. Not even stretching out my arms and doing the 'dambusters' made up for it. Plus I was right in front of Keegan and saw the abuse he got which was unfair.

Scotland are too pathetic to have a rivalry with.

Ireland. Who the f***ing ell are you?

Wales. Nice place strange people.

France. Shithole.

Germany souless.

Australia. As wales.

USA. Gay.

Argentina. Watching Batistuta cry when the got knocked out of the world cup 1st round. f***ing lovely.

I made up a simple test. Its England 5, The other team 1 - who would you rather it be out of the ones you list? It had to be the twists.

Got to be the Aussies overall. Watching 4,000 of them going mad behind that goal at Upton Park, in the one game where we should be creaming them, was the final indignity. For me, they have just pushed the Germans into second place.

Tooting, I was there to right next to them. I left early the only, only, time I have ever left any game early.

I went for the Argies - purely on a football basis and over the last 10 years or so. I know we have a proper history with the Germans, and the Aussies will always be the classic enemy. The Scots will always be there, but there's not really decent competition, now are they?

I think the level of bad feeling and current needle between us and the Argies - in football at least, makes me want to play them in a semi-final rather than anyone else on the list.

Good poll. I've gone for Australia because we're rivals with them in two mainstream sports: cricket and rugby union. We're miles better than them at football and they're miles better than us at Rugby League - although as Upton Park and the occasion RL Test prove the underdogs are capable of having their day. Also they are the most arrogant nation on Earth and it's always great seeing them taken down a peg or two.

Ten or fifteen years ago I probably would have said Scotland - but as they are currently crap at everything it's very hard to call them 'Rivals'. Their cricket team is probably their best representative side at the moment.
