I’m particularly impressed by the leadership shown by those in ESU. They’ve been leading the way since 2011.

It’s a great initiative; particularly at kids’ level.

It means coaches and parents should refrain from calling out instructions or comments during the game and just let the kids make their own decisions and play with a bit more freedom and hopefully enjoyment.

I’ll occasionally encourage our defence to move up - or tell a player to watch across the line if he keeps getting caught offside - but other than that I say very little during matches tbh

Ah, now when you mention it I'm sure I've read it here before.
Its a great concept.

Would struggle a little bit with it in the style I used to coach - very loud and energetic "good fighting!", "lovely!". Never a negative word though so not considering myself part of that particular problem. Also very limited instructions, though that eternal problem of the defenders staying too low after a set piece... hard to get away from addressing that.

Especially important for parents I guess.. they're often the biggest issue. When taking charge of my teams I used to adress that the first thing in the first meeting with the team & parents - "I coach, the kids play, the parents watch". Still happened in tense games that I had to tell a parent to step away or shut the f*** up, some people can't help themselves yelling instructons or moans at the ref. Maybe not always great for the kids to see the coach tell their father to go sit on a bench 100 meters away, but quite effective as those parents will rarely do it again.

Hopefully this Silent Support thing could be a global idea because I suspect it is highly needed in LOTS of places. Its worth giving more attention as I think in most cases these problems can be resolved through giving youth coaches better instructions and education on how to treat players and deal with annoying parents.
