I am watching the first series of Grange Hill

I am confused as they seem to finish school at 5.00 or 4.30. Was that normal in the 70s? I'm not quite and old enough fart to know.

Also Tucker was a right little shit in this series. He was a hero when i started watching it.

Our senior school Tideway finished at 2:15, a quirk of history due to the availability of school buses with an 8:10 start! With shortish breaks. Loved the long afternoons/evenings.

All the Sussex competition started at 9ish, with a proper lunchtime and finished much later. That was the senior school norm.

I only found out when our kids went to school that Brighton’s senior schools had kind of copied this …. when did the change occur …. in the 90’s?

In the 60s/70s Boundstone was 4 o'clock. As was my Lancing primary school (South Lancing). The Croydon one I was at before chucked us out at 3:30. 4:30 does seem a bit late.

I was at St Luke's and used to come home for lunch and also listen to the top five on Tuesday's as well as play Subbuteo league in breaks. I had one of those counting sheep nights and I was trying to work out the school hours we did. I settled on:

09.00-12.15 (break 10.30)
13.15-15.00 (break 14.00)

It still doesn't seem right.

At Stanley Deason

08.45-12.30 (break 10.30)
13.30-15.15 (break 14.15) Not so sure of that one but I remember a teacher who gave out detention saying 'Three fifteen' and I remember listening to FA Cup draws on the lunch bell !

Perhaps someone can correct if wrong.

At Varndean in the 70s, we finished at 3.45. We started at 9.00 but were expected to be there at 8.45

50s and 60s - 9.00 to 4.00 in my Sussex schools, with 1 and a half hours for lunch, same when we moved away to Hampshire - bit of juggling with the lunch hour when it got to grammar school, but still 9.00 to 4.00.

In the 60s I think all senior schools finished at 4pm. There was was one notable exception - Moulsecoomb Secondary. They finished earlier to avoid the 4pm finish at Allen West. Once that hooter went, Moulsecoomb Way just filled with people - some on bikes, some walking, fewer cars than now. 3,000 or so people was like a football match turning out - with very few early leavers!

I'm too old to remember given it was in the 70's and 80's but I think Carden and Stringer were around 3.30pm.

I was definitely home in plenty of time for Graham's Gang and Crackerjack.

If I remember rightly, Bexhill High School used to finish around 3pm ish.
Quick sprint home, uniform off and into shorts/jeans and t-shirt.
