Diclofenac (pills) is worth trying for acute attacks. I do not like the side effects and I prefer Nurofen.

As said above diclofenac is the best pain relief for an attack (allopurinal for long term treatment but don't take it while you have a severe attack). You can buy diclofenac over the counter (it is known as Voltarol and comes in pills and cream) but you have to take something like 4 pills to get the equivalent 50mg of Diclofenac and they are expensive (nearly a fiver for 8). Haven't tried the cream but if it is a severe attack you will be agony applying it.
Good luck with it mate and if it's a regular thing get your GP to prescribe Allopurinal but be aware you have to take it daily for the rest of your life.

Have never suffered from gout but broke the first bone I have ever done in my life last night in a small toe on my left foot. After initially thinking it was just bruised I woke up in severe pain and was sick with my toe swelled up to twice its size. Casualty confirmed a fracture and after being anaesthetized, the bone may well take a few weeks to heal. All for kicking a plastic sack which I thought had just paper in but contained concrete.

This was my most recent attack, 3 weeks ago! Took 2 courses of steroids to tame... It was a bitch I'll tell ya:

My right knee!

Specialist thinks that I have a chronic liver disease which is causing the attacks... I'm due to get my results in a couple of weeks.

None of the usual medications work for me so there must be an underlying problem.

Like I said, my quacks are a waste of space! I have never really been ill until the gout started... I then developed some severe stomach aches and they blamed that on beer until a scan revealed gallstones. That has now been sorted thank Christ as that was also horrendous!

When I ring the quacks all they say is that we have no one available to see you today and can you ring and try again tomorrow or make an appt for sometime next week. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr fecking useless tossers!

I had it in both knees and was getting attacks for years until I got to see a rheumatologist, she prescribed alopurinal, I've taken 200mg a day for 1 1/2 years and never had an attack since.
I guess you've tried all the usual and seen the right specialists? just goes to show that some gout cures work for some and not others. I hope you find your cure soon mate as I know how miserable it can be, good luck.

Diclofenac is an NSAID and should be taken with cauition as it can cause liver damage and severe stomach bleeding. It should also never be taken with any other NSAID, like Ibuprofen, as you can kill yourself doing so, and it's not a nice death apparently.

Cheers mate... I have been on allpurinal for 4 years 600mg per day and taken diclofenac, dicoflex and colchicine for attacks and they just don't work ... I'm under the rhuematologist now and very glad to be at last... He gave me a very thorough examination, 2 hours worth of x-rays, blood tests and all sorts. I had some fluid taken from my knee as I was recovering from an attack at the time. He put me on the steroids which I had to take 2 courses (1st one didn't clear it)... I'm Still in some discomfort now but nothing like I was and hopefully upon diagnosis there will be some sort of conclusion.

I am very careful with my diet and I have stopped alcohol.. I take regular excersize and according to the specialist I am of normal weight... I need answers and fast!

I NEVER want to suffer THAT pain again.. I genuinely considered suicide... Amputation without anesthetic would have been less painfull I swear!

please be careful with diclofenac/voltarol - I used it as a prescription drug for arthritic pain relief for some years and it caused kidney failure - see your gp rasther than relying on it too heavily as there are better alternatives

Chris, Have great sympathy with you mate, having suffered for 20 years on and off in hands and big toe. Most painful thing in the world. Took me years to find out the cause and I am still not sure if i have cracked it but I have not had a bad attack for about three years. Causes are different for each individual. I stopped drinking larger and changed to bitter, and that helped don't ask me why. The main reason for attacks appeared to be eating over ripe fruit especially strawberries. Drink plenty of water 4 litres a day, flushes system out and stops the build up of uric acid. I am also on alopurinal 500gms every day. As others have mentioned cherries/cherry juice are good for reducing attacks. Hope pain goes soon.
