Gough quits Test cricket

Gough took 229 Test wickets
England fast bowler Darren Gough has retired from Test cricket.

Gough, who has taken 229 Test wickets, struggled in the two Test matches against South Africa after making his comeback following three knee operations in the last two years.

He took 1-88 in the first Test at Edgbaston and 0-127 at Lord's.

The 32-year-old said on Tuesday: "Every day is a hard one and my career is based on being a strike bowler and being the one the captain always turned to in time of need.

"But, but I've found the last two matches hard going both mentally and physically - not just on playing days but also against the backdrop of the effort I've put in over the last eight months to get back to this stage.

"It has become apparent to me, no matter what my heart, head or public want me to do, that my knee will not allow me to play Test match cricket."

The correct decision. Goughy was a good servant to the side but it's time to move on.

Surely this is this Kirtley's chance?

yeah Kirtley has got to be given a start now, no more call ups and "thanks but we dont need you for this match" from the selectors!

Gough was great on his day and got loads of decent wickets, his Hat-Trick shall live long in my memory

Cheers for all your hard work Dazzer! I still remeber that hatrick on the 95 Ashes Tour of Australia!

You will be missed, but it's the right decision!

A great player who, I'm sure, will will want to forget his attempt at a come back.

As, indeed, will the rest of us.

Come on, Stewart. It's your turn now. Get that press release drafted.

Good news, well done Goughie.

Hopefully by the end of the summer our attack will consist of Hoggard, Anderson, Jones and Flintoff.

We still need a f***ing spinner though...

In the meantime, play Kirtley as a fifth seamer and let Butcher or Vaughan do the part-time spinner's bit.

I've always thought that one of our batsmen should play as the spinner, Vaughn has a good arm and gives the ball good flight. Even Trescothick can turn his arm over if needed.

Here we go again, Englands fully fit XI

Trescothick
Vaughn
Smith
Thorpe
Flintoff
Solanki
Read
Jones
Kirtley
Anderson
Hoggard

I get the feeling Gough went before he got the push

Top performer for us though and one of the only people who played the game like the fans would

It's the right decision, but in all honesty who is going to replace him. I'm going to get slated for this, but Kirtley isn't good enough for test cricket - sorry. Let's be honest, Sussex wouldn't be anywhere near 2nd if it wasn't for Mushy. However, why neither Martin-Jenkins or Ambrose haven't been selected is beyond me. They are young & very good players. They're the future of Sussex & possibly England!

As Champions the Saviour said, we need a bloody spinner

Apparently Ambrose isn't elligable to play for England until 2005. Kent have got a top keeper though, and he's averaging 65 with the bat (better than Ed Smith)

Good call Stumpy, totally agree. Talking up Kirtley for England is like when we used to say Zamora was good enough for the full England team.

Prove me wrong James, prove me wrong ........

I think its different with Kirtley, he is the highest english wicket taker in the first class cricket at the moment and i believe third overall. If anyone deserves his chance then its him.

This is bad news. The end of an era. It's bad enough being without Caddick, but Gough as well...

I thought that the few games he played for Yorkshire before the 1st Test were to give the knee a full, rigorous workout. Is he saying the knee was fine then but buggered now? It sounds as though he shouldn't have been playing in this series in the first place if that is the case.

I think that the England selectors have a poor record related to fitness issues. How Johnson gets the nod ahead of Kirtley is beyond me, particularly as he is the Darren Anderton of cricket.

I would rather Kirtley plays for Sussex and helps us win the Championship. Surely Jimmy Ormond deserves a chance as a seamer, Salisbury can give it a tweak, and recall Ramps and Thorpey

Wouldn't that leave Surrey terribly depleted for the county matches :lolol:
