The former Everton and England goalie has died aged 69.

He was a bit of a character and I remember him playing for Tranmere at the
Goldstone in 1977 and exchanging some good natured banter with the crowd.

England No 1

He was battling it out with Gordon Banks for England Number 1 spot before the 1970 World Cup.

However, he decided not to go to Mexico for family reasons.

If he had gone the QF result with West Germany could have been a whole lot different.

Remember that game well. He was absolutely huge and, apart from a Nobby penalty (if I remember correctly), we couldn't get anything past his large frame!

Apparently he struggled to keep his weight down throughout his career. Most of the banter from the South Stand comprised references to his michelin man appearance.

He wrote an excellent autobiography called "The Championship in my Keeping".

Good account of the highs, lows and insecurites of being a professional footballer.

There's a good obituary in The Guardian, by NSC's very own Not Andy Naylor.

I particularly liked the bit about how he became a goalkeeper in the first place.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of West's success was that he had barely played in goal before becoming a professional in 1960 with Blackpool. Born in Darfield, South Yorkshire, he was an unexceptional defender for Don and Dearne Boys, in Barnsley, when a team-mate was invited for a trial at Bloomfield Road and asked West to accompany him. West told Blackpool he was a goalkeeper, a position he had always fancied. Within months, he had established himself in the Blackpool team ahead of Tony Waiters, the England keeper.

Yep, I remember him as Everton keeper and then seeing him at the Goldstone for Tranmere.
