Good things about modern life

I'm sick of hearing endless moaning from older people about how life in Britain was so much better in the old days and how you could leave your door unlocked when you went away for a two week holiday and no one would dare go near your house.

Or how you didn't have drunken idiots roaming the streets on Saturday's nights (so you didn't drink back then yeah?!!) so I thought I'd list some things that are quite clearly better nowadays, mainly in this country.

1) Less racism
2) Less homophobia
3) Better and more varied food (curries, chinese etc)
4) Drink driving frowned upon
5) Better standard of sports
6) Better standard of football (Stan Mathews or Zidane
:lolol: )

Anyone care to add?

Having double glazing and central heating. I used to have to clean the ashes out of the fireplace before relaying the paper and wood to light a fire before I could get warm.
I was married for two years before I could get a gas fire

Automatic washing machines, tumble dryers, more supermarkets all make life a lot easier.

I cannot agree with you there. If anything, food has been blander and more manufactured.

I cannot agree on that - the scrotum of bland food manufacturers Mcdonalds is bigger than ever.

Sorry but I disagree with you big time on that one.

I'm afraid SussexHoop is right. The old-school tie network, cronyism and nepotism are still rife in modern Britain.

A great step foward is the INTERNET - the greatest medium for assisting democratic change ever.

Cronyism was on its way out until we voted in a labour government

Back to modern life.

Telephones everywhere (some would doubt that is a benefit but when living in exile and the only communication for a home sick young Mum was by letter, you would realise how much a phone is now taken for granted)

I think you will find BT intend too withdraw about 30% of payphones shortly as non-profitable.

No doubt to try and promote more mobile sales

I heard about that.

I was referring to private phones in houses.

You would be surprised how few people had a phone in the 60's and 70's.

Remind me again, who privatised BT?
