It's amazing how there are no thickies around who fail??
And they say they are not getting easier!!

Some questions were on sky news today, one maths question showed a bar chart it had 4 Bars one significantly higher than the rest, the question was which is highest (or most prolific)

I know they can only pass what is put on front of them but for pass rates to be better for the last 23 years that is telling a story and looking around the UK it's not more intelligent teens!!

Hi there,

Just thought I'd tell you to do one. Sky are full of shit, and they'll say any old nonsence to get you to stir all the stories up.

If you knew what you were talking about before you spouted this crap on here, that would have been on a 'foundation' paper where you have to get 80% to get a C in your GCSE.

Aye good luck to you all. I don't understand the news coverage though. It's not news is it? They never had results on the news when I were a lad. Back then though the exams were hard so not every tom dick and harry were getting A Stars so maybe not as newsworthy.

Anyone can pass a GCSE exam, its just hard work. But to get A or A* you have to be good.

Secondly (Not directed at you) more teens are passing in raw numbers, because errrm. Well. There are more teens. Percentages may have risen but thats because we've got more technological advancements than other generations.

What REALLY fucks me off (again not directed at you) is how people say its getting easier. Its not, we've just got more to help us than before. It sounds like sour grapes. Just because other generations didn't have the internet...

(I'm starting my A2's next year, i'm not in the GCSE year)

Not being funny but GCSE's were so easy when I did them two years ago. Got 6 A*'s rest A's with no revision and pissing around most of the year. They mean nothing ultimately though, as long as you get 5 c's to get to Sixth form, you're more than fine.

At last a bit of honesty.

When I did my 'O' Levels, the certificate didn't even mention the grades achieved. We were told what they were, but I've forgotten.

I remember the subjects though:- English Language, English Literature, Maths, Physics, French, German, Latin and Geography. I failed History spectacularly, but the teacher still suggested I went on to 'A' Level to study it.

Maths, Science x2, English Literature, English Language, French, History, Drama, Religious Studies were all part of the Syllabus at my school. Maths, Science, English Literature and English Language were all compulsory, along with Religious Studies.

Sorry, anyone putting down anyone anyone after getting their results, whether saying that they are 'too easy', 'not worth anything' or anything else, are utter tools - and incorrect.

Well done to everyone who worked hard, and I know many will have worked very hard, to get the best results you can/did.

What I found with GCSEs was that the subject matter tended to be quite straightforward, just the great number of subjects you took exams for made it more difficult.

It's hard to tell whether they are getting easier for me as I only took them 6 years ago. And having just completed a degree, GCSEs obviously seem very easy now in terms of difficulty and didn't require as much effort.

I also found with GCSEs (and to some extent A Levels) you learnt how to pass the exam. For example, for GCSE maths, I must have gone through each exam of the previous 5/6 years learning what type of questions came up and the method of doing it. It was repetition which made the content stick.

In my opinion I think students are focused too much on passing the exams (of course not their fault, it's a culture they are faced with at an early age) rather than learning the material to gain knowledge.

I have to say I completely agree.

Hardly any point doing them, the step up to A level is enormous.

How does that work then, considering you have to do the GCSE to get onto the A Level course? Also, the effort, although not as large, gives you a great learning experiance and really gives you a taste of how the next few years are going to be.

The media focus on the A/A* students because it makes for good TV and adds weight to the argument it's all getting easier but it's not like that for everyone.

With my daughter there are some things that no matter how hard she tries, she just doesn't get it - Maths & Physics. That's something I've struggled to get my head round because for me Maths is so logical but that's just the way her brain works.

For her, today was a D for Science (expected), D for History (unexpected), 1 A, 3 Bs, 5Cs. For me, her greatest achievement is not in the A or the Bs - it's the C she got for Maths. Incredibly proud of her.

Gotta agree with this. Did them in 2009, and hardly did much revision, ended up getting 7 A*s with the rest As. Mmm, doesn't really matter what you get as long as you get into Sixth form, yeah. Not taking anything away from those doing GCSEs atm, as they are good preparation for A-levels and all...

I was thinking a year or so ago about retraining as a teacher, but decided to spend some time in a school first - Durrington High School in Worthing. I was absolutely astounded at the quality of the teaching compared to what I remember from school. Lessons were prepared down to the minute, with variety and interest, yet a good amount of drumming in of information and a heavy emphasis on what you need to know to get a good grade in the exams. I don't think that exams are getting easier, but standards of teaching have improved massively.

Congrats to everyone who worked hard and got the grades they needed.

Did it say how many marks it was worth?

This may come as a shock to you, but I suspect answering that question probably doesn't get you an A*.
