I too like the Peter James Roy Grace books. Easy read. Based in Brighton. John Grisham and Michael Crichton are always good.

i'd ike to get into these Peter James books. Is there an order? which should I read first? does it matter?

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.
Fantastic book...best I've ever read.

Could I add A Week in December by the same author....I don't read as much as I'd like to, but got through this in a few days.

Play Dead - Harlan Coben ** - starts really really well then turns into a farce

They work as stand-alone books, as everything is explained at the beginning, recurrent character wise (a bit annoying if you've read all of them!).

However, if you're planning to read them all, then you may as well start at the beginning.

The order is:
Dead Simple
Looking Good Dead
Not Dead Enough
Dead Man's Footsteps
Dead Tomorrow.
Dead Like You.

I particularly liked the Philip Kerr "Berlin Noir" set.........crime in Nazi Germany,and a decent feel for the era,also the follow up set in South America after the war.Excellent stuff,I thought,though of course others may think my selections are rubbish.

I was pleasantly surprised by reading the name of my former dentist in one of Peter James's books.

Ian McEwan is a good bet. I thoroughly enjoyed 'Innocent' and I am beginning to work my way through his range.

Just finished 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthopists' by Robert Tressell

Set in Hastings (Mugsborough) in the late Edwardian period, this book will change your life

It's an excellent book - I've just re-read it again and it's still compelling. There's also a very good production of it currently playing at Chichester (a joint production with Liverpool Everyman) - it's well worth seeing if you're a fan of the book - and worth seeing if you're not.

Have you read Patrick Hamilton? Virtually all his books are wholly or partially set in Brighton. He specialises in stories of the louche underclass- they're not exactly bundles of laughs but are very good.

James PATTERSON - Alex cross one's....if you seen along came a spider that is one of the books..only recently started reading Patterson and best books i have read in ages.

Also give Chris SIMMS, Tess GERRITSEN and Dean KOONTZ ago.

i like crime, thrillers, mystery that sort of thing. probably get flamed but read the Dan Brown books and the Stieg Larsson books.

Have you tried Kathy Reichs? Very descriptive but has you hooked!

I agree its not essential to read them in exact order, but there is a recurring thread through all of them with regard to Roy Grace's missing wife, which gets a revelatory airing at the end of one of them (without wanting to give too much away), so its probably best to stick to the order I reckons.

Loved the latest one (Dead Like You) where the guy goes to an Albion match at Withdean to meet his drug dealer. I reckon I could've done with some SMACK to get me through some of the games in the first half of last season.
