Mid-Sussex is a great place to play. What are you calling "reasonably cheap" ?

As i said im a beginner... somthing maybe less than £250...

im fed up of using different clubs everytime i play, there seems to be a huge difference from one set to another, so i just want my own and learn how to use them.

played Cottesmore for the first time Sunday, was not impressed at all, very narrow fairways and awful greens!

Picked up a beginner's set for 200 quid 2 years ago, not a bad set, had a pair of shoes and a free round thrown in. Have slowly replaced them bit by bit. Ozone are the clubs. Still see it as a good deal, stainless steel, so not the best but good enough for a first set

If you want good advice and good prices, go and see Michael Henning at Haywards Heath Golf Club. He will sort you out and will not rip you off

Would have thought you can do ok for £250ish. As Hercules said, American Golf isn't a bad place to start, they seem to be pretty good for advice too.

For a "beginner" course, try Rustington, not too long, some decent holes - it is a 9-hole course though, so you go round twice for a full round. Has a v good range and shop too.

Hi mate.

I suppose it boils down to how serious your going to get about it.

I started playing last November and bought a great little set off these guys....it was at the time £99 for every club you need and they were perfect for a knock about if thats what your after.

I did however get mildly obsessed with the game and now its main hobby and therefore have spent loads of Taylormade Irons and Ping driver. It has taken shots off my game bigtime, you spend more you get better quality such is life.

Missus bought me Titliest AP2 irons (3-PW) for Christmas. Added 10 yards to my shorter irons and 30(ish) yards to the longer irons.

RAM were a big name in golf during the 80's and 90's. Not so much now. Tom Watson was a RAM tour pro.

All of the major manufacturers will have beginners sets, but that does not mean that they are any good. Which is why I suggest you go and have a chat to a good club pro with a good stock of clubs for advice, even if you dont end up buying from them as the discount warehouses may just try to flog you whatever it is they are trying to get rid of at the moment.

Got mine Sept/Oct time couple years back as a pressie for graduating. Got a great quality set half price (£200-£250 paid) with a nice bag thrown in free too. Can be cheaper sets if have 3 woods not 5 (1,3+5 no 2+4) and some people don't get irons above 5 (1-4) though I use my 3 and 4 occasionally they hard clubs for beginners. Deals to be had if don't mind 'last season's colour of shafts/heads' or some such bollocks. Might be more deals too that time of year as they obviously sell more in the summer when busy and have a glut of gear to shift.

Very addictive, I agree. I took it up about 10 years ago, when I was about 38, but wish I had started younger.

The Problem with this is, i essentially have no budget at present so could quite easily spend £300-500 easily no doubt i could be talked into it.

if i get a set i no some of it will be cheap and a bit shit, but i can replace clubs i dont use or like the feel of as i go on.

by the sounds of it a beginners budget should be under £200. iv already brought some great golf shoes! very comfey.

Any good sites for clothing? off to bournemouth for a golf weekend, been told i need to get some Poulter type CHINOS.

one question, do ball make much of a difference?

Mid Sussex sell second hand clubs on behalf of their members. I saw a set of 4 year old Taylor Made Irons (SW-4) there the other day,all re-gripped for £140.Theres also a few other iron sets all in very good nick.

This may be the better option than getting a RAM set. I would then get a 3 and a 5 wood, get used to them and them think about a driver later down the line.

Good place to look first is charity shops. Got myself a decent first set of full irons plus a bag (found the price sticker still on the bottom and was originally £90) all for £15.

The day before brought it they were £25.

Balls are much of a muchness unless you have a low enough h'cap.

Dont spunk a load of money on expensive balls that your only going to send into a bush/lake - can get a bag of 50 grade A Titliest/Taylormade etc on ebay for 20 quid

Not a Bad Suggestion, im up there Saturday for a round, so could well be worth a look!

I have realised not to tee off with a driver :lolol: for some reson i hit it straight but it starts to pull to the right big time, i started aiming to the left but realised this isnt great tekkers! so have been using irons so far, currently trying to master the 5 Iron.
