I think we played Port Vale at home very soon around this game. Being at school I could only afford to go to one game - England B or Port Vale - not both.

Port Vale it was then :dunce:

Yes, I was there - Tuesday November 14 1989.

Just dug out the match programme (all £1.00's worth of it!):

England: Nigel Martyn, Paul Parker, Tony Adams (c), David Batty, Gary Pallister, Tony Dorigo, Michael Thomas, Paul Gascoigne, Dennis Wise, Mike Newell, Steve Bull. Subs: Dave Beasant, Lee Dixon, Andy Linighan, Paul Williams, Peter Beagrie.

Italy: Gianluca Pagliuca, ??, Marco Lanna, ??, Marco Baroni, Luca Pellegrini, Diego Fuser, Angelo Carbone, Ruggiero Rizzitelli, Giovanni Stroppa, Salvatori Schillaci.

Unfortunately, don't have a record of the scoreline!

The only reference to it I could find was from TheFA.com:

"On a great night at Brighton & Hove Albion's former Goldstone ground in 1989, with 18,000 packed inside and many more locked out, Paul Gascoigne strutted his stuff against his Italy "B" counterparts.

Within seven or eight months "Gazza" had wowed us all with his performances during the World Cup".

Think he may have been upstagrd by "Toto" Schillaci who won the Golden Boot!

So you were fighting on the terraces at 9? That's some youth firm we used to have!

Look at those names on the England team! Are you sure it was 'B' and not the England 'E' team?

It was indeed 1-1, and Adams did score, having got some donkey related grief from the North Stand.

I seem to remember that there was a bit of a tradition at the time that a player from the club who hosted the game got considered for the match, and there was speculation that Chappers might get into the squad. Poor deluded kid that I was, I actually thought he might play...

(Not a comment on Chappers, by the way - my all time favourite player, just acknowledgement that it was highly unlikely).
