Has anybody taken either a campervan or caravan on a holiday to France. I want to take my old Sherpa Campervan over there for few days but am not sure about things like electric hook up, camp sites etc any body with experience got any advice.

My parent do 3 months camping in France a year in a caravan they are both in there early 70's and they love it.
Exactly what do you want to know because i am sure they will tell me in detail!!

They were having dinner one day down in or near Brantome (sp) last year and Dick Knight was on the next table my Dad he was going to talk to him but thought his meeting looked quiet important may have been an agent.???

Could you ask them what is the best book to buy that lists Cam[p sites or indeed if they know of any decent ones within about 70 - 100 miles of Calais.

Also I am sure that I read somewhere that you have to change the polarity of the electric for France. Is this just a case of fixing a standard British 3 pin socket on a piece of cable and attaching a french plug on the other end and wire it the reverse way round i.e their live to our neutral and our neutral to their live as I don't think that plugs in France have an earth, In UK we use the round hook up plugs are they the same in France?

Any help would be appreciated, as I want to try it and although the camper is old ' her indoors' says it is too far but if I suggested going to Pentewan in Cornwall, where we often go, she wouldnt bat an eyelid.

High up on the South Downs.
Driving in France is usually much easier than in England as the roads are less crowded and stressed except in Paris. All the other big cities can be by-passed. 100 miles is an easy drive even in an old vehicle - and the French are less fussed about having new cars. Go for it!
I actually saw a Dick Knight look-a-like in France but he turned out to be a monsieur.

Why not go from Newhaven and cut 70 miles off your trip straight away?

Went to Ile de Re and Paris in a VW combi a while back, absolutley great fun, much better facilities for camping etc than here and better weather.

As has been said, just plot a course before you go with the right type of facilities and it is easy.

The fare from Newhaven to Dieppe is nearly twice that of Dover to Calais because it is a 5 hr crossing also there appears to be many more delays, or so it appears with the SCR travel news. I am not worried about the drive I quite enjoy it.

3 hour. The delay was because a boat hit the pier and had to go away for repairs, nobody told SCR. You can also go to Le Havre from Newhaven now.

According to LD Ferries, who own Transmarche website, the crossing is 5 hours and the Le Havre one is summer service only and doesnt start until May. I want to go after the Port Vale home game and be back for the Hartlepool game so about 11/12 days.

I have no worries about France as I have been over there and driven there many times but my query was about the electric hook up as we have always stayed in a motel usually Formula 1 or Premier Classe. This time I wanty to try it in my old Sherpa Highwayman.
