So, what do the erstwhile members of NSC think about the prospect of the forthcoming US presidential elections. Obama hasn't quite been the refreshing change most were hoping for but probably doesn't help that the Republicans have large majority in Congress although the Democrats have a narrow lead in the Senate.

However, we could end up with a member of the Church of Later Day Saints with his finger on the button just as Iraq are seemingly progressing towards nuclear capability!!! Fun times ahead.

Hopefully, Obama will be given another term but then I don't get to vote.

I certainly think there are more important issues going on at the moment, Like a win at Wrexham tonight.

At least the Latter Day Saints have a thing about seagulls. (Sorry, you'll have to search Wikipedia tomorrow!)

In one of the early polls of a republican primary last week, Obama (a democrat) got more votes than any of the republican candidates. Obama got Bin Laden. The republican party are doing their best not to select mitt romney as their candidate, but he keeps sneaking wins and I could see the "proper, god-fearing christian republicans" would rather not vote than support Romney, or vote for an independent splitting the republican vote.

I would be surprised if Obama doesn't win the next election.

What the f*** has Obama done so far?

I would be surprised if Obama doesn't get back in simply due to the Repubicans not being able to field a credible candidate.

Romney is fairly credible. He is utterly bland but at least he's not looney bin like the other 5 Republicans in the race. And of course, his success in business is going to sit well with a lot of the electorate, especially as Obama has done nothing to reduce the unemployment rate in his tenure.

More of an asset stripper really. Leveraged buyouts leading to closing local manufacturing and going to the Far East. The positive result they got (apart from lining their own pockets) was Staples - which was a seed investment - and where the growth came long after Romney had gone.

(all this is from the New Yorker Political Scene podcast - that I would recommend to anyone interested in US politics).

Romney supports the 'corporations are people' crap currently circulating in the US. Which means that by his own, and the other wingnutters, definition he is a seriail killer.

I think I'd prefer Romney to Obama at this point, Obama has charisma but lacked any real substance. People will say oh well he killed Bin Laden, but that's one thing out of the many missed.

Yep, I'm aware of these points (this week's Economist has some in depth analysis on the Republican race). The Economist argues that the asset stripping argument is slightly facetious given that he turned a company with a $34m turnover into one making $200m. Jobs were lost but also created (although his claims of a net increase of 10,000 jobs can't really be proved or disproved)

As for the 'corporations are people' idea, I agree that this is bollocks. However, compared to some of the other candidates who want abortion abolished, banning of same sex partnerships to various degrees, the 100% backing of Israel over Palestine irrespective of rights and wrongs and so on, Romney remains the most electable. When state governer of Massachesetts (I think) he was the main exponent of a policy of compulsory health care insurance, which is as close to state healthcare that the US has ever come. Too bad that has become a his achiles heel now that the Democrats have tried pushing through their own version, because it was quite sensible.

Having spent a couple of weeks in the States recently, just before the Iowa Caucus vote, and having listened to interviews with (most of) the Republican Party Candidates, Romney would be my choice (although I hope Obama gets back in.)

Some of the others, especially Rick Santaurum, Newt Ginrich and Michelle Bachmann frighten me. (I think she's pulled out now anyway?)

Years ago, my granny said.. 'doesnt matter who you vote for, the government always gets in'.....laughed at the time.... but its been proved true over the years since.

'Iraq progressing towards nuclear capability'....they found those pesky wmd's then... :)

The views of these conservatives are actually quite scary. I don't think one of them believes in global warming, or at the most deems it 'not threating to the planet'. Then there's Rick Perry who strongly opposes evolution. I hope Obama gets back in, on the social issues these canditates stand for, alone!
