And whilst we are talking about those shit modern box-style goals, I HATE the ones at Leicester that have grass for the first yard behnd the gaol line, then the blue of the perimeter track surrounding the pitch. It messes with my head and looks shit. If I became CEO of Leicester, that would HAVE to be sorted out as Job 1, Day 1.

What a crime against football :nono: I wouldn't permit that on a council-run pitch never mind a PL ground with consistently one of the best surfaces going . TRAVESTY.

Great thread (genuinely!). I’m actually quite partial to a crisp, white box net though I do miss the nostalgia of the more unique, old school ones I grew up with in the nineties, when football was a relatively new concept to me and just the most exciting thing in the world. One thing that does wind me up however are the dark nets that they used to have at the Etihad which make the netting appear invisible:

It also winds me up when the area within the ‘box’ itself is synthetic turf rather than real grass, especially like at Leicester where half of that area is bloody blue! Absolute sacrilege.

Ah, you beat me to it while I was posting below. Forget coronavirus, this is one of the biggest problems in the world today and I will not be convinced otherwise.

I remember a goal in front of the North Stand c1994 that belted straight back out off the D stanchion or whatever was there. Looked like it had hit the post from our vantage point in the South, although it seemed implausible as we'd definitely seen it look on target.

Want say it was either Nogan or Dickov, but might be wrong.

I had such a fascination for the goal posts at the 1978 World Cup that I painted the foot of my subbuteo goalposts black using a marker pen.

I love this sort of thing. My favorite nets are the Italia 90 ones.

Firstly, I liked the hexagons in the net pattern. Secondly, it was a box net that wasn’t too springy. In my humble, but very strong, opinion when a ball smashes into the back of the net it should stay there. All the better if a keeper has to then spend a short while digging it out of a lump of netting.

I spent half my childhood watching my All the goals of Italia 90 video, and I can remember plenty of belters that just kept going when they went in.

Any of you other poor sods have to build and then take down shitloads of these for a summer tournament? My first effort was like Ray Charles making Ikea flatpack.

That made me smile. I eventually got it down to a fine art. 6 really long (well a little longer than the rest) is the key for the cross bar and bottom back bar. I never however managed to get it back in the sodding bag and Velcroed up properly. have known other dads to colour code or number the polls, and the net always seemed too small to stretch over it.

I always LOVED the old Wembley goals before they replaced them with those horrible box-shaped ones. Those old Wembley goals were a thing of BEAUTY in terms of proportion and netting. When I was a kid I could identify pretty much every top flight grounds just by the shape / style of their goalposts. Sad we've lost that, in my view.

They really were iconic, such a shame things had to move on..

How about the ones at Hampden park in the same era? What were they all about?!?
