This, with huge great brass knobs on.

Think I started a thread some time last year asking if The Cure were the UKs greatest rock (sic) band - my feelings haven’t changed after tonight’s performance. No gimmicks, just a good old fashioned musical treat.

Mark Radcliffe just said as much.

Some good bits, some not so good. Too many of their crappy, commercial songs for my liking but as he said, the last half hour was for Glastonbury.

I also don't particularly like the guitar player - The Cure don't do guitar solos but sometimes it felt that he took over. And he couldn't play From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea for toffee. But there we go, not seen them live since 1987 and nothing can beat the first time I saw them at the Dome in 1982. But I think the crowd enjoyed it and that is what matters.

QUITE a moment when Streatham's Dave invites a member of the public on stage to perform Thiago Silva. He's wearing a Thiago Silva PSG shirt... and knows EVERY word.

21:00 in this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p07dpj98/glastonbury-other-stage-sunday

Finally feel like the U.K. hip-hop scene is getting the love it deserves at long last. The quality of work being put out over the last few years has been incredible, and I think most people who listen to it could have told you that it would work perfectly on the biggest stages in music. It’s been a long time coming but Stormzy & Dave have finally booted the door down that Dizzee started opening nearly 20 years ago.

I fully expect the current crop of upcoming British Hip-Hop artists to make themselves at home in the headline slots of Glasto, Reading & Leeds.

Call me cynical, but was he randomly plucked from the crowd?

Knowing how big that song is/was and how passionate Dave's fan base is (as well as him doing something similar with less success at other festivals) I would 100% say this is a random fan plucked from the crowd. A PSG Silva top is a pretty big indicator of a safe bet when he picked someone.

We’re talking about the first British rapper to have a #1 single without any pop help, and also beat Foals to a #1 album earlier in the year too. He’s a big deal to a lot of people.

Anyway, for a weird Albion connection to Dave; Dave organises a football tournament for his birthday every year, where a load of rappers enter teams and they draft in their mates who are good at football. The Santan Cup 2019 featured 8 teams, including a team from Glastonbury headliner Stormzy, and numerous pro players including Nile Ranger & Rian Brewster. Where was the tournament held? The Americans Express Elite Performance Centre.

(They also invited Sunday League YouTube team SE Dons which is how I saw the video and found out it had been at our training ground.. SE Dons have Zak Ansah playing for them, son of former Albion loanee Andy Ansah)

To be fair it's those crappy commercial hits that make someone like me watch it and end up enjoying the whole thing.
Most successful bands have a few commercial hits in their repertoire, it how they make millions and make people like me sit up and listen and buy their records and maybe watch them live.
I was waiting for the only 2 I know and ended up liking the whole gig, and they only played 1 of the 2.

That's a bit unfair. The bloke is 60 and he's played a barnstormer tonight. Not missed a beat, not fluffed a lyric and sounding like he did, give or take, 30 years ago.

He has sung every note by himself for 2 hours non-stop. I think he has done an incredible job. It must be hard doing that when you know it is, in all probability, for the last time, but still carry it off.

To close the Pyramid stage is a huge responsibility. Job done, I reckon.

Not that keen on them...but credit where credit is due...agree with that lot

Yeah, he does it for TS at every gig now, I think? Seen footage of Dave picking out a kid in a PSG shirt before (not the same kid). Easy way to announce you're up for it.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the deal with Dave and PSG?

What a festival.

And I now look forward to hearing the tales from folk who were there.

Headliners will include The Killers and The Cure, it could be great.

I hope The Cure play their some of their hit singles, not a pretentious set of obscure album tracks.

Four months on, The Cure were even better than I’d hoped for.

An amazing performance, they sound exactly as they did 35 years ago.

Simon Gallup’s bass play was stunning and I had forgotten that Robert Smith’s guitar play is another immaculate ‘string’ to his bow.

Loved that so much.

My kids like to listen to a bit of rap/hiphop I quite like some tracks, my only criticism is how many times artists mention Cars, Gucci, Louis V, money and I grew up poor it all seems a bit repetitive same words just in different lyrics. Can’t blame them easy way to earn I guess.

Gonna say - a few in here praising The Cure's musicianship - not watching the same gig as me. Some great, great songs but a fair bit of the playing was very ropey/clumsy/clunky. The bass was far too trebly as well, lost in with the guitars too often. When you're playing in the higher register a lot you need far more mid/bass than he had.

Interpol would be a good example of a similar style of guitar/bass work but with a far higher standard of musicianship.

I loved The Cure back in the early 80s (late 70s?). I saw them loads, including a couple of times where they supported The Banshees and RS played guitar for both bands.

I am sorry to say, this is a bit...lacklustre. A bit karaoke like, almost. You want a headliner to blow you away.

Stormzy did. The Killers manifestly did not. The Cure tonight? Meh.

My favourite bits have been: The Ezra Collective (bringing on Jorja Smith and Loyle Carner was special), The Comet is Coming, Loyle Carner, Chemical Brothers, Foals and Lewis Capaldi's stage entrance. I am looking forward to catching up with Kamasi Washington, The Streets and Neneh Cherry.

I wish I was there.

I agree with what you say about The Cure. I was really a bit disappointed with that set - all a bit samey, lacking a bit of oomph. The Killers are shite, won't be bothering watching that bollocks.
