[Music] Glastonbury 2022 line up

What a wonderful week that was spent in the company of some my dearest friends. It was my 8th Glastonbury and I would put it up there as one of my favourites. It was also the year where I respected my limits and didn’t overdo it. The weather was perfect too. Performance wise Phoebe Bridgers delivered the emotional set that I was really hoping for. Macca surpassed my expectations an astonishing musical journey with the added bonus of Dave and Bruce sealing the deal. The Pet Shop Boys absolutely blew me away with their set, fab show combined with a banger filled set list, it truly put a ribbon on a great week.

Other notable sets, going from Diana Ross (who was great if you were there) into Turnstile who tore up the JP with some incendiary hardcore was such a great example of what makes Glastonbury a special festival. The Nova Twins were another newcomer that impressed me, an early performance on the Greenpeace Stage really woke me up on Saturday. A very drunk performance from Self Esteem also at GP was a hoot and a delightful warm up for McCartney. Olivia Rodrigo also smashed it and her response to the Supreme Court ruling with Lily Allen was a great moment.

As for my one off beat Glastonbury moment, it would be seeing a bar full of people basically start a mosh pit to The Chain by Fleetwood Mac was just hilarious. Roll on October and the big ticket bunfight can begin again.

GLASTONBURY took place this weekend, you watched some of it on the telly, and you’ve decided the ___ set was so great it’s key to your identity. But which?

Paul McCartney

The firm, confident, straight-down-the-line choice of boring ********, Sir Paul played a meandering set reminding everyone why he’s everyone’s favourite living Beatle by default. Brought on two previous Glastonbury headliners as special guests, making dads proclaim this as unquestionable value for money. You liked when he did the Bond theme.

Billie Eilish
Either you’re 20 and get it or you’re not and you’re trying too hard. One girl leaping and whispering does not a thrilling spectacle make, and a two-album career means a set full of deep cuts. You liked when she did the Bond theme, you say, even though she didn’t.

Kendrick Lamar

Having completed his rise to headlining fame without you ever having heard of him, you sat down to Kendrick last night and were pleasantly surprised. Lots of them had tunes, it was appealingly theatrical and way better than Kanye in ’15. Yes, you announce at the watercooler, Kendrick was your favourite. And because of that he’s not cool anymore.

I've no issue with the line-up, this year or any other year in particular. I follow Glastonbury on the tv / iplayer and the radio so I usually manage to find enough stuff that I know I'll like - as well as quite a bit of stuff that I didn't know I would like, but I did. So far as the artists I don't like are concerned, I don't watch their sets but oddly I like the fact that they are there anyway.

But one thing that has always intrigued me is how do the organisers go about booking acts and scheduling running orders? Obviously Emily Eavis can't do it all (or perhaps she does?); so is the line-up / running order for each stage managed by a separate person? Or are there specialists in the different genres who book acts across the stages? How do they decide on the balance and what stage to put any particular artist on? (Some will be obvious, but others will be a judgement call). What contingencies do they put in place to accommodate last-minute pull-outs etc?

I watched the "Glastonbury at 50" documentary on the BBC the other week, hoping it would offer a little 'behind-the-scenes' insight but there was none of this - most likely because it is only of interest to knobheads like me. But each year that I watch it, I do come away thinking, how on earth do they manage to put that on each year?

The Pyramid Stage and the Other Stage are booked by Nick Dewey who is married to Emily Eavis.
They also do The Park stage with help from others. All the other stages are programmed by different people.

Finally catching up with all of this year's Glastonbury music.
Have been enjoying all of the artists, but a stand out for me was Self Esteem, Lianna la Havas and surprisingly for me Billie Eilish.
A great collective of sound this year.

Saw all three of these live. Feel free to hang out with us at a future Glastonbury.

Had to cancel seeing Self Esteem earlier in the year, so glad to have caught her/them. Fab singing voice/harmonies and slick moves. A definite highlight.

Seen Lianne at least six times previously. Never disappoints. Perfect for a chilled, sunny Sunday.

Billie Eilish wasn't a first-choice but friends were keen. Interesting, well-produced show... although thousands of (mostly) young females around us sang along loudly at times making it feel like a musical or something.

We've missed our injection of live music lately.
Usual weekly treks to London, especially Shepherds Bush Empire have slightly dried up, mainly because of work getting in the way.
SBE is always good to go to, as upcoming and artists making a come back, play there as its small and intimate, plus not so expensive.

My first too - I'm 60. There were loads of Albion flags and shirts, always greeted with 'Seagulls!'. You are so right about the smaller venues being where you find the most fun.

Special mention for [MENTION=41448]The Fits[/MENTION], whose backstage bar at West Holts was truly lovely - brilliantly run, and an oasis of calm amongst the carnage.

Vlog from young Psychobilly band the Red Hot Riot that played a couple of sets this year.
They seemed happy Bez watched their set, Bez used to be into it before he joined the Happy Mondays and found drugs, he sometimes can be seen at Rockabilly/Psychobilly gigs in Brighton or London.
