It is true.

And it must make Aston Villa, Spurs, Man City, Liverpool, even Everton ,Fulham, Stoke ,

Newcastle, West Brom, Norwich,Southampton,Brighton,Notts County, Grimsby and

Torquay wonder what on earth is going on.

The whole champions league competition is becoming more and more pointless every year.

As someone previously posted, at least Rangers are champions, even if it is a mickey mouse league.

The whole thing needs to be scrapped and then revert back to the old European Cup format. Champions only, in a straight forward knock out competition.

Let the 2nd, 3rd, 4th placed teams play in another competition

the trouble is though that it would become very boring, with the champions of only a few countries contesting the final every year

at least with the current format, there is a bit of variety in who gets to the latter stages - something that wouldnt be the case if united or barcas route there involved the challenges of taking on the champions of moldova or latvia

calling it the champions league just takes the piss at the moment

I think the current system actually does the opposite - the group stage means that upsets have less impact because the best teams can then go on to win the other games. If the team from Moldova or Latvia get lucky in ne game in the group stage then it doesn't mean as much as in a knockout competition when they'd go through to the next stage.

i agree in that it is ALWAYS predictable in who gets through from the group stages, but once you get to the knockout stage with the current format it becomes exciting as it is genuinely unpredictable

in a straight knock out, especially over two legs, the stronger side will almost always come through - with only the champions in it, it will be less competitve and mean that it will always be the same champions from the same leagues in the latter stages

i would love to see the group stage dropped and go back to a straight knock out format from the start, but by only allowing the champions from each country it would become a lot less competitive

Are you genuinely that niaive? The European cup was the best format but doesn't have as many games, hence less tv revenue, hence less money to the big clubs. It was only created to prevent the big euro clubs forming their own super league in the first place.

Money talks, unfortunately.
