This is quite a tough category Barnet: I'm finding it difficult to find a song that I'm frustrated by. Instead I'll post a song by an artist who must have been just a tad frustrated that her original and far superior version was dwarfed in sales by a singer who inserted a rabbit into the lyrics! I think we can all come up with ideas of why this transpired, but let this selection be emblematic for all the artists who have been frustrated by a lack of success because they weren't the type of performer the industry wanted to promote.

Me neither but it sounds like it might be a bit pretentious

1990's music scene ambient meets punk rock, musicians often looking at the floor rather than the audience:

If you don't fancy this sort of music then avoid My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Curve, Boo Radleys, Lush, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Pale Saints, Chapterhouse, Mercury Rev, House of Love, Luna, Pavement, Sonic Youth etc. etc.

If you don't like guitars you REALLY won't like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3hYEwCmMhY

BTW the guitar thrash section was usually done over a period of 5-6 minutes getting louder and louder when they did it live. I know because I saw them do it at Brixton Academy 1992.

Having seen Hawkwind back in the 1970's I could see the cut of their jib...

And to think I was at Glyndbourne listening to Mozart last night... :lolol:

Not so much me, but everyone I know.

"Goes on too long"

"A track where nothing happens"

I love it, especially the extra long bit in the middle

Evening Harry, as you will see from my previous post, I'm fond of extra long bits in the middle as well.

Killing Joke preceded Shoegaze by a few years but I can hear them in several Bands I namechecked.

Great Song, War Dance also a favourite of mine.

Evening squire. I know all the bands you mentioned  Not a big fan of many of them.

If you like KJ, check out Redbeat ???

Will do so - never heard of them are they UK/USA or European?

I'm amazed given what you post that you wouldn't like My Bloody Valentine - Loveless is basically an album devoted to making guitars not sound like guitars over backbeats and barely audible vocals - would have thought it right up your street. :lolol:

Must get onto sorting out your Caravan selections.

Seen MBV do that a couple of times too, and the section of which you write seems to go on longer than 5 minutes: an awesome experience akin to sticking your head in a jet engine (less heat though.) The first time was probably in '92, and my brother and his girlfriend had partaken of some kind of enhancing substance. I remember the look of sheer terror on their faces as the noise built. I think they ended up in the foyer :lolol:

On the Border
Single edits.

A prime example - Won't Get Fooled Again single edit 3:37 against the album track 8:31. Almost 5 minutes hacked off, so frustrating.

Falmer, soon...
Levis advert came out and the excerpt from this sounded great. Then the single was released and it turned out that it sounded good because Arthur Baker had sped up the awful dirge they had recorded to make it less tedious. After the intro. the song reverted to it's natural speed and it was terrible. Didn't stop it getting to number one or being all over the radio for weeks.

We have a winner. Absolutely triggered by this.

https://youtu.be/VuTVKO0RScI

and then on to more 90's horrors...

The first 30 seconds are bearably good and then...

Thanks Barnet Seagull.

In tribute to the sadly departed Loretta Lynn, give me a song written, (or co written) by a woman that has her type of gutsy spirit.

Something like this:

Or something completely different. Your choice.

I could have gone for Big Mama Thornton again, and her song Ball & Chain, which became a hit for Janis Joplin (see the pattern?) However, I couldn't see beyond this stunning song:

The problem with MBV (one of Mrs T's favourite bands) is the guitar effects are overdone, and the first couple of tracks I heard were marked by considerable wavering around the note, which I found irritating. Then there is the track that has four minutes of song and 7 minutes of sustain. I don't dislike them as such, but I find it very easy to ignore them. I have around 5 tracks of them on my iPOD.

Since I don't want to detail the thread, add https://www.youtube.com/watch?v to the text below to link you to my favourite Redbeat track.

=Q4tmUFgweQw

They never made an album and the CD release is a mix of their Peel sessions and singles. I chatted with the drummer a bit 15 years ago. About arthritis and the wonders of evening primrose oil among other things  He told me they toured with Killing Joke and were on the same lable, and the lable decided to put all their money on Killing Joke, and that was the end of it.

There are remarkable similarities between Redbeat and Killing Joke, less apparent on 'Machines in Motion' but very clear on many of their other tracks. I am unsure who copied whom.

Give it a proper listen. The bit where the music comes back in around about 3.40 has the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time. Peel played this and I still have it on a casette tape.

After Redbeat broke up, the two Jones brothers became the backing band for their younger brother Howard!!!!!

Hard to argue with Nina Simone tbh, but I'll throw a hat in the ring for Sainkho Namtchylak too.

She's from Tuva and has very much cut her own path, embracing her tradition but at the same time having to fight against it. She practises overtone singing for example, a very rare thing for women to do. She also survived a physical attack that left her in a coma.

A lot of her output is very much 'out there' and makes someone like Bjork sound mainstream. I saw her live once at The Barbican.

This is a track off of what is probably her most accessible album. All tracks self penned. The album... Stepmother City... is brilliant from start to finish.

Radio songs where whole verses, riffs or choruses are cut out to make the song shorter and nonsensicle.
Very frustrating.

Pulp's 'Common People' has a single edit that omits the best and most biting lyrics of the song:

"Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why"

You can never tell its that version until it reaches that bit and it just skips to the end chorus. Like getting a doughnut with no jam.

Have you tried their early stuff. Bit less of the challenging, bit more of the harmonies. A touch of the jangle.
